Day 1: We made it on the mountain at about 7:15 pm. With there being absolutely no day light we set up camp. Pitched the new tent we picked up from Cabelas, gathered firewood, and cooked some pheasants over the fire in a cast iron skillet. Without being able to get any scouting in during day 1 we made a game plan for day 2 which was opening day.
Day 2: We woke up at 4 am and started the fire. We maked some breakfast burritos in the skillet and loaded the truck. We left base camp around 530. After an hour Ling drive on some of the worst roads I have seen (rocky and ruts). We made it to the top of the mountain. We knew we would have to get high as possible as the weather had been in the 50s-60s. At first light I glassed some country and was able to spot 2 deer in some patchy trees. They looked like does but was unable to clarify before they got into the trees and never returned. I then spotted 3 bucks about 1500 yards away. I was able to get my spotting scope and verified two of them were 2x2 and the other was a big bodied 3x3. After showing my uncle them (first one to shoot due to his amount of time off) through my glass he made the call that they were not worth making a play on them. We spent till about noon glassing the rest of the area. We couldn't turn anything up so we made our way down the mountain back to camp. We made some lunch and a new game plan for the evening. We eneded up not going as high for the evening hunt. He dropped me off at the bottom of a draw and I hiked up on top to get a good vantage point to glass for the evening. After sitting on top of the glassing knob for about 5 hours that evening I didn't spot 1 deer. We met up at camp and he didn't see anything either. Both frustrated we decided to head back to the top the next morning.
Day 3: With this being the last day to hunt for my uncle we knew he would not be picky. We both also had a doe tag in our hands for this unit. We made it up top for first light. I couldn't glass anything up this morning either. Both frustrated we decided to road hunt our way down back to camp. As we drove down the road we jumped a 2x2. My uncle jumped out and dumped the 2x2. He then saw it was with a doe and dumped her too. There was another 3x3 with them and another doe. I took off after the 3x3 but was unable to get a clear shot. We gutted the doe and 2x2 and made our way back to camp. After cleaning up camp we made our way home.
Day 4: Made it back out a week later. After some snow and cold weather I figured it would be good hunting with deer moving around. First thing in the morning I spotted a doe and a fawn and quickly moved on. About 2 and half hours later I spotted a group of 8 does and a decent 2x2. I passed on it after watching them from about 400 yards. I really wanted something bigger. Thankfully I did and was able to get this guy at 300 yards a couple of hours later.
