MT rabbit snaring
« on: November 10, 2023, 05:33:32 PM »
Headed back out to Montana in a week to try to redeem myself on elk.  But, definitely saw a lot of high use rabbit areas when I was there a few weeks ago and thought it might be fun to set a few snares (fisherman style).  Am I reading the regs right that it's legal there, but that you need to put your name and address on each set (I'm thinking masking tape?).

I should probably just concentrate on big game, but have been suckered in by watching too many episodes of Alone... strange that it doesn't seem to be legal in many places.  Maybe it's not strange that it's illegal in WA given the way things are going but if I'm reading it right it's also illegal in ID.

Thanks y'all

I'm not really familiar with MT regs but a quick search showed only that there is no season on rabbits. No season on coyote or fox either which I have heard makes them open to trapping without a license. Bottom line though I don't know. I think I would call MT FWP to be sure if it was me. If it does require a license then you probably have to take MT trapper ED.
If you can do it, I'm not so sure about masking tape though. Trappers supply dealers sell trap tags, usually copper, brass or aluminum. If the masking tape becomes unreadable you are going to be liable for a ticket I imagine.
Sounds like it could be fun though to put out a few snares to check when you are in early from hunting.
Good luck!
