Anyone ever seen a cougar with an ear tag??
« on: November 13, 2023, 03:18:50 PM »
Wonder if it was a problem cougar that was relocated??  No radio collar so I can't figure why they would have caught it and tagged it otherwise.  Thoughts

Well it's been caught and released that's for sure. In the past I've gotten tagged cats, helps them keep track of what happens to cats that have been released.

Here is another pic with a tag in the other ear as well.  Do they always tag both ears?

Male or female???  I would guess male, but It is a guess.

The ones I've seen had one tag. But I'm sure there's a reason for two.

Deer in my area have tags in both ears.

That is a good sized cat.

I got one in 2008 that had both ears tagged, the biologist I talked to said it also had a collar at some point before.

You want him???  I've got way to many.... :chuckle: :chuckle:

Gonna give it a go this year and see If I can call one in to kill it.  We seriously have way to many cats in this state.  I'll post a few more pics from the last couple cam checks.

That cat looks very well-fed.

Got this one in the Blues foothills back in 2014.  Can’t remember the details but there was a collaring study done back then. I want to say it was 5 years prior and maybe in a part of the Blues 10 miles away? I can’t remember for sure.

I'd have to pull out old SD cards.

But yes I have had one on cam ,with an ear tag.
About three or four years ago.
I do remember that it was April,It was a brand new setup.
First pic on the cam was a cat with an ear tag.

We got two on camera a few years ago in the Methow, both had ear tags, both were traveling together because one of the pictures we got had both cats in it. They possibly may have been tagged together as kittens  :dunno. We talked with an old game fella we know who we told where are camera was. He said, “I’m surprised you only had pictures of two in that area”. That statement speaks volumes.

Your right jrebel, this state does have a cougar problem! Controlling/managing just them more aggressively would make a huge positive impact on our deer and elk herds in a short amount of time imo.

They have DNA sample from every cat harvested.
They could show you the cats family tree. LoL 🤣.
Then all the cats that have been tranquilized, study's, research project,or relocated.
Then you have all the rest that are unknown, come down from Canada, ect, ect.

We definitely do have a cat problem, but it's not the only reason herds are in bad shape.
Found a dead doe today. With a bullet hole in it. Left to rot.
Crows told me right where to look. Only thing missing on it was it's eyes and bum.
Perfect lung shot, looked like to me. So why it got left to rot is beyond me.

Also , it was darted in either June or July, I think it was was June but not positive, in Cle Elum and made it to Skookumchuck where I got it in late October while deer hunting.

Two years ago I called a collared cougar to within 31 yards.  I was trying to call a bobcat at night, something I'd not tried.  I checked with the biologist in our area who is tagging and radio collaring lions, and his tracking data showed the cat at my location at exactly the right time.  Large male that had weighed exactly 150 lbs. when collared a few months before.

Yes, but literally everywhere I put a camera.....I get multiple cats pictures.  I'm gonna take a wild stab at it and say I have....100 different cats on camera over the last 5 years.  This covers a lot of ground in Eastern WA.  I am amazed I don't see more in person.....makes me wonder how many have watched me walk by???   Thank goodness I don't look like a bag of meow mix.

I have both the "blood moon" and the "Clandestine" cameras made by bogpod.  When they first came out they were 200 ish dollars, if you watch for sales, you can buy them for sub 60 dollars now days.  I purchased 10 cameras last year when they were selling for $44 a piece..... :yike: :yike: :yike:.  I love these cameras, I should have bought 20 more for that price.

I know I got about 7 different cats on cam ,out of a dozen cams this year.
I'm way on the other side of the mountain.
So ya we have a lot of cats in just that area.

But hey, there’s only about 3000 in the whole state is what they tell us. I sure hope all this tagging and colloring they’re doing finally helps them with more realistic numbers, it wouldn’t surprise me if the true numbers are close to double that. That’s a lot of deer getting smacked.
