Bad Practices - Be Responsible....BBQ Flats Area
« on: November 15, 2023, 03:26:38 PM »
Was up at BBQ Flats last weekend scouting for my upcoming hunting trip and came across quite a few mule deer remains in camp sites. 1 particularly stuck out and i was going to take pictures but decided to not be "that guy". Just past BBQ Flats in Cow Canyon someone had left behind in the campsite two deer hides hung in a tree, then in the fire pit next to it was the heads of a doe and a fawn. Looked to be a week or less old kill. Pack your *censored* out properly and leave the campsite as you found it. Non-hunters see this garbage and actions like this give us a bad wrap. Always remember, its a select few that ruin in for everyone.

I'm pretty sure I know who the offenders are here.  I've seen a few other sites like that throughout the unit.  Disgusting.

I guess if you are dumb enough to poach you are dumb enough to leave that stuff laying about in the open. Being that dumb will sooner or later get you caught.

Sure enough to flame em online? There was an instance a few years back when I took the wife up into the elk woods for a night to check cams and hike. Fairly close to the entrance we saw a camp that didn’t look right. I wanted to back up to get a few plate numbers but we were on a mission. Next day the camp is cleared out besides the cans/bottles/foil/trash and spray painted words on the ground that I’m not going to repeat here as it would be censored anyways. Since then if I see something out of place I take time to document.

That’s wild….I was amazed at how clean those large campsites are when I was in them this year.  The remote camps up on the hill are the ones that pissed me all the way off.  Garbage left in quite a few of them.  Huge 10x12 ish area rugs that were clearly used in a wall tent, just left to rot.  Targets garbage ect.   These were modern elk hunters based on how fresh it was and time of year.    :bash:  :bash:

Never ceases to amaze the number of garbage bags I fill up and haul out of hunting camps. You would hope that hunters would be a little more responsible than that. If they knew their identities were being documented they might be less apt to pull that stuff off.

I definitely plan on bring a box of contractor bags with me when i go up for the late archery hunt. I will say the majority of the campsites were left in excellent condition.

Thanks for the post. I definitely second the "bring black garbage bags with you everywhere you go" comment. I try to pick up trash every chance I get. Best way to make a difference is to just get out there and make a difference: combat the bad with the good.

Are you saying they should pack out the hides and heads?
Or throw them in the bush out of site?
I've never been there, but is it an area that gets road hunted alot.
Some guys will leave remains in the open just to be little other hunters, especially in areas with alot of road hunting activity.
Not saying it's right, just saying what I've seen in the past.

Whoever made this mess at BBQ Flats was not a hunter. They were poachers. Pretty sure there aren't any doe tags open in that area right now. This isn't a normal hunting camp we are talking about.

Poachers or some other group.

People really do weird things.  I don’t even want to know where their minds are at.  Why they think it’s funny or cool. Same as taking a dump in the middle of a camp or fire ring.

Especially when the fire is nice and hot
