Your Alaska Transporter/Air taxi experience
« on: November 28, 2023, 06:43:17 AM »
Been in the works of planning a moose hunt for a while now, and most likely trying for 2025. Talked to a butt load of pilots and outfits thus far. I have composition book full of information through chatting, but I'm curious of your experience.  Any small outfits you would recommend? Feel free to pm as well if information is sensitive.  I've chatted with most the ones that come up often, and as of now I'm leaning on Trail Ridge Air for a flight out of Anchorage and Mark Romo out of Dillingham.  If we go out of Anchorage I have a dozen spots picked out on the west side of the Alaska range in around the east side of 19B. Out of Dillingham we would be looking on the east side of the Woodtickchick. I heard about Nick's air service and plan to give him a ring in a few days. I haven't looked much up north of Fairbanks along the south side of the brooks range, but have heard some good things. Talked with a few outfits that boat you in along the koyukuk and surrounding areas.  I've for the most part ruled out Tok as I only see a few air services that can take you out and getting in with them seems near impossible.  Seems to be some legal stuff going on with one outfit from what I've read, but rumors are like a disease sometimes. Planning on going with just one other guy for now to learn, and hoping to make this a every 3 year thing with the difficulty of elk tags. I should add I've been to Alaska a ton for fishing and fly out via float plane every year with Regal Air, so I do have a little understanding on how it works, but fully understand moose is a horse of different color compared to fishing.

I'm also super curious if anyone knows anything about the Gagaryah river too.  Zero information online about it and that definitely intrigued me knowing people are not talking about it.

Doug and his crew are all amazing pilots with well cared for aircraft.  I flew out of Nikiski to Chisik Island this summer with Doug in his freshly painted, stunning blue Supercub. Loads of game to see on the way out over just a fraction of the hunting area he covers.

They are true professionals and worth the call!

I’ve used 40 mile air out of Tok with great success. Most of these outfits can help you with animal location too. Places to go, places that haven’t had people already dropped in them that season. Out of the two you mentioned no question the Dillingham outfit. The population density of animals in Western AK is much higher. 19 can be okay around the edges of the park but it’s hunted much heavier in my opinion. Two completely different types of terrain too. Are you doing a float hunt or drop camp? I’d once again lean to the float hunt if you don’t have an area already scouted out. Best of luck 🤙🏻
If you shoot the first one you will never get that true trophy.

I'll give them a look! I don't think I chatted with them in the past yet.

Trail ridge is a good company you can trust. Since your familiar with regal you might ask them about a transportation service too, they'll do some drop hunters.

I've chatted with 40 mile and just couldn't get a spot in line so gave up.  I'm open to a float hunt as well which is why I was curious about the Gagaryah river. Keeping a pretty open mind on the type of hunt. For the float hunt I'd just need a pilot as we already have good rafts we could fly up.

Yeah I chatted with Tony at Regal about it, but he wasn't willing to drop me off on a couple particular lakes that I was super intrested in. Trail ridge said no problem on getting a 206 onto those same lakes. I will still keep Regal in the back pocket.
