I just got my idaho moose permit in the mail. It is for area 3002 or 1a around priest lake. I have been reading all the moose stories on here and all the draw results and am excited. My hunt is oct 1 to oct 14 a friend suggested I stay in newport he had a 49 degree tag last year and thats where he stayed.I have never been there so if anyone wants to share ideas let me know. Congradulations to all that drew wa. tags I got the not selected for mine.

If you are staying in motel/hotel - there are places to stay up at Priest Lake, Nordman, Coolin, Priest River. It would keep you closer to your hunting grounds. You might be able to rent a cabin from someone up in that neck of the woods. Good luck - we expect lots of pictures

The permit I put in for only 8 non-residents put in for and non-residents could have 10 percent of the 14 tags so it was 1 out of 8 which is good odds the way drawings go.

The unit I drew only had 5 tags available so only 1 non-res tag could be drawn meaning I had to be one of the first 5 names pulled and the first non-res name. 26 non-residents applied and 38 residents were the total # of applicants so it depends how you want to figure it. 1-26 for non-residents or 1-12.8 for total tags.

I'd camp where I'm hunting. I would set up came and sleep in the back of my pickup. I could call right from my camp. Run and gun, if it's late in the day you stay where you parked. No need to drive far. BTW, have good sharp knifes with a steel. 8 elk size game bags, I used a small 3 part block to move him around to cut up. Have help if you can, just lifting a hind leg to bag was a bitch. That a 8x10 plastic tarp to lay your meat on to keep clean. I had six and two were loaded pretty good. I got 482 lbs of boned out meat, only bones I left was hind leg ball socket to hock, and front shoulders, blade to the hock.

Going to be some good eating, moose was by far the best meat I had. Also if you are calling for them one of the things that I did while in Alaska was have a white pillow case or something similiar wadded up in your pocket, if you get one coming in and it hangs up make sure that you are in some good dense cover and wave it around it gave the moose a visual to focus on and then they came in fast and hard. Good luck to you, have fun.

There are several on here that should be able to help, but I'll definitely steer you a couple directions. Bottom line is... there are nice bulls in every corner and all the areas in between of that whole unit.... Those dates will work good for calling too, I've had 3 or 4 bulls grunting and going ape sh!t all at once during that time period a few years ago...
I have to sack up and start putting in for that tag, regardless of cost....

I will be in the area during that time buckhorn. I will be flirting back and forth between Wa and Idaho. I'll extend the same courtesy to you if you'd like that I did to Goldtip. If you either leave me your cell or location, if I find a big one I'd let you know. You can view the pics to decide so you won't be on any wild goose chase. Let me know. I'm keeping fairly quiet about my locals as I hope to hunt it again with the Mrs and plan on doing a bunch of photography there, but if I find a good one and you care to know......
