I was on the YTC unit the last couple of days helping out two youth hunters and their dads with cow tags. I had previously hunted the unit briefly a couple of years ago and was somewhat familiar with a few of the areas, but by no means an expert. The weather didn't cooperate on this hunt as it was very foggy so no elk were tagged. We did get in some bird hunting that proved to be fairly successful.
Because of the foggy conditions it was very difficult to navigate the area and find the hunting unit boundaries that we had selected. It's kind of a pain even when it isn't foggy as you almost need two people. One to track Onx, which doesn't show the training area boundaries, and the other trying to navigate your location on the paper map they give you.
Does anyone know of a mapping app that also shows the training area boundaries? I know there's something out there because I talked to one of the police (while I was changing a flat tire) who had a map on his phone that showed the training areas and roads. All I could get him to share with me at the moment was that he got it through an app called "Avenza". Maybe this is proprietary to base personnel only?
I looked at Avenza and the only map of the map I could find did not show the training area boundaries. I'm only familiar with Onx and may call them to see if they can help. Do any of the other mapping apps show the boundaries that anyone is aware of? Any other suggestions?
I may have time to scout for these youth hunters prior to their next trip, but navigating that area on your own it's almost impossible to keep track of your precise location.
Any input would be appreciated as I'd really like to see these guys tag out on their first elk!
