Alaska Caribou Hunt Recommendations
« on: January 06, 2024, 02:31:48 PM »
Hello everyone! I'm in the early stages of organizing a caribou hunting expedition for my uncle, a seasoned outdoorsman who ignited my passion for nature years ago. I'd greatly appreciate any recommendations or advice on this venture.

I'm specifically interested in the following criteria:
1) A rifle hunt experience.
2) A fly-in or backcountry experience.
3) Targeting caribou that are not in velvet.
4) While the budget is somewhat flexible, I'd like to keep it within a reasonable range, starting with a cap around $3,000 per person.

I've heard about the allure of the Brooks Range, but I'm open to exploring more affordable options for caribou hunting. If anyone has valuable insights or suggestions, please share your knowledge and help me plan an unforgettable experience for my uncle!

Are you looking for a stationary camp or float type trip?

Brooks are awesome, early-mid September...but 3k is running pretty tight...I would double your budget before heading up there
So there's no surprises...AK is just expensive and unfortunately money solves problems... so have alot of extra money ! Awesome place tho, cool hunt that seems to be in danger of disappearing

As kenetrek eluded to, I don't think it could physically be done for under 3k. Airfare, tags and licenses, travel logistics, and air taxi. It adds up FAST.
It is foolish and wrong to mourn these men.  Rather, we should thank god that such men lived.  -General George S. Patton

Double the budget and start looking at what's even open anymore...AK fish and game as a real user friendly website..
Be ware.
Lots of subsistence driven closures

I have a soft spot for the Brooks and the north slope. If you can get in there late August early September it's an awesome experience.
Start calling any and evey transporter you can find and see where they are hunting and what availability they have..
In general your probably looking 2-3 year's out to get booked.

What ever your doing and looking at don’t wait. There’s lots of talk of closing caribou to non residents in certain areas.

$3k isn’t going to get you a bush flight anymore and finding a transporter you might be a couple years out before you can get on somebody’s schedule. I’d like at an airboat drop off up on the slope that’s more budget friendly.

Unfortunately what everyone has already said... $3k isn't going to do it...

About the cheapest you could do is a Haul Rd archery hunt and you MIGHT stick to your cap...

Not all of the airboat operators on the north slope are good. Do some research before you pick a cheap one.
There is not enough wilderness left in the world, or in the hearts of men.
