Man looks like such a great trip.
Tried the fly rods a couple times. Too much wind, big flies and in a canoe. Just was too much to put together. Plus all the fish we were catching were deep. Lots of smallies on crank baits. Even that 29” pike I caught on a #5 shad rap.

I wondered if you would be bringing fly rods. Too bad you didn't have better conditions, it would be a blast to go to such a target rich environment tossing flies.

My buddy had a 10’ 6wt and I had a 9’ 8 weight. Earlier in the year when the fish are in the shallows and on the banks, it would be ridiculous. There are so many fish. We decided bluebird sunshine and high water temps caused the fish to be deep and not strapping on the feed bags.

Also gotta say I really like those NRS knives for the pfd!

You said the fishing was "off." If that is what "off" looks like, then my bar is way too low. I did five days there a couple July's ago and our fishing was not nearly what your pics show. Glad you enjoyed the trip. The country sets the bar for scenic beauty.

The portages were not bad at all. They measure them in rods and a rod is 16 1/2 feet. The one big one we did was 120 rods and that one was kind of a bear with all our gear, but it still wasn’t really too bad. We just had to double trip it because we had too much crap.

I had it in my head that we’d be having a walleye fish fry every night. Everyone says this is a really great time of year to fish. We caught a crap ton of 10-14” bass, a handful of bigger bass, a good number of pike but mostly all small and only 4 walleyes. We tried a very small amount for lake trout to no avail. It was good fishing, don’t get me wrong. I wish we caught more walleye.

Man that brings back great memories. What a beautiful place. And for those of you who've only caught West Coast walleyes, this is what they're supposed to look like!
The muddy portage cracked my up. We were NOT there in September. Adding a couple zillion mosquitos to that scenario really livens things up! Glad you had a great trip.
