I said 4 years ago when everyone got excited about a 2 bear limit and extended season on the east side that they would use this against us. And no real change in west side hunting areas. But now proposing one bear and September 1st opener state wide. Makes no sense for the west side hunters. They did a 4 year run to take more away than they gave to us. Plus why not shorten the later half of bear season not the early part when people actively target bears. Because they know it’s the great part of season when hunters target berry fields. And when they aren’t focused on hunting other species during august such as deer and elk. So by putting the season later state wide they know come September hunters are gonna focus archery deer and elk, then muzzy deer and elk. Just a load of crap. We all have seen this coming the last two years but the say about the agenda to screw law abiding hunters is real.

This season date change to me is a bigger slap in the face then going to a 1 bear limit.

Also the proposal to use state depredation killed cougars against recreational hunting quota is a joke. So many flaws with what is happening.

And proposal to get rid of hunter orange during modern makes no sense. For them always talking about safety concerns.

After doing a lot of looking I think these were the recommendations that I saw last September. I think and hope at least with the trapping the wording has changed. I know I had some commitments on some different wording than what is in the screenshot. I don't see anything on their website that confirms this and  it should be published if this is a final version.
I'll see if I can find anything out.

Did you guys read the WDFW responses to these changes.
It's pretty interesting,sounds like some of these changes are not needed.
Basically saying they will be reviewing these changes in the game management plan.
Overall looks like the department doesn't agree 💯 with it.
Also the department says a lot of cougar management is based on the current harvest rate.

It's any human caused death of a cougar will count towards quota.
Road kill cougar.
Shoot a cougar in self defense,or attacking livestock.

The way it's worded is kinda crazy.

All this looks like it's coming up in the commission meeting in February.

Those are off the table. All these recommendations came from somewhere within the Department. They then were presented to the Wildlife Committee with a recommendation from the Director on which ones should be given further consideration. The Wildlife Committee than gave the Director direction to write proposed language on the ones he recommended. The ones he had recommended against which the two you mentioned are among, didn't make the cut. The only ones being considered are check time on restraining traps, turning in bobcat jaws, reporting requirements for cats and otters which we already do and season setting.
I will note the Wildlife Committee did keep regulations on Sea ducks for themselves to write. Everything else is on the Directors desk for now. I don't believe any language on these proposals is final as of now.
We will probably see the proposals scheduled to go to the Commission in May so we should see them available for public Comment sometime in March.

I'd think it was pretty awesome to hear the response from the department.
Find out where everyone stands.
I'm guilty of throwing the book at WDFW in the past.
Got some respect out of me ,just to hear there response and know what's going.
I like that kind of format.

This isn’t consistent with the social science where almost three quarters of Washingtonians surveyed believed predators should be managed to help struggling deer and elk.

“Respondents were first informed that the overall health of deer and elk populations can vary because of factors including severe winters or poor habitat conditions. They were further informed that, when deer or elk populations are depressed, predators can hinder the population's ability to rebound. Respondents were then asked about their support for or opposition to reducing predator populations to increase deer or elk herds that are below population objectives. In these cases, support (71%) far exceeds opposition (15%).”

The survey is from 2014 conducted by WDFW.

The public is on the side of hunters and has been consistently that way in past surveys done in 2002 and 2008. Social science is on the hunters side when it comes to predators.
