Suppressor Background check delayed

I ordered a suppressor through Silencer Central about a year ago.  I have confirmed the paperwork was received on 4/27/23.  I knew it would take several months so I wasn't really worried about it.  Then a friend that ordered one a few months after me (also through Silencer Central) received his. So on 1/17/24 I called and was told my background check status was delayed.  And my only course of action was to look at the www.fbi.gov website, which I found was no help.  I called again today and my status is still delayed.  I have my CPL, an active Secret Clearance, no felonies, and have never been delayed on a gun purchase.  I do have the same name as my dad and he recently passed away, but I would think that would be easily resolved.

Has anyone had any luck figuring out why they are or were delayed?

Delayed just means they have like hundreds of thousands of apps and maybe like 5 people working on them.  Delayed to me would mean they just haven't got to it or possibly doing additional back ground check due to same name as your dad.  That happened to my friend that had exact same name too.  Just going take longer imo.

Seems like it’s just luck of the draw, when I bought mine a guy got his approval in 10 days! The guys behind the counter couldn’t believe it. Usually 6-9 months he said.

I had a delay on my first one years ago.  Stayed that way for over a year then recieved word from ATF that it had something to do with the FBI's background check on me.  Eventually I got denied.  Ended up getting a UPIN number and then started all over with the process.  Now I'm good to go.  Never did find out why I got denied the first time around.  Frustrating process for sure!

It's all bull. I have five guy with six background checks all in Delayed NTN, with no solid explanation from the ATF, and the FBI claiming that all background checks inquired about have been resolved. All but one of them already own suppressors, AND I have one customer that holds a FFL that got denied. The Feds are playing games at the customer's expense.

I just picked up 4 th e other day. A little over 7 1/2  months. The guys at the counter said it has been between 7 and 9 months average lately but we all know there are out lyers both ways. He said he recently had a 3 months and a 15 month

My official wait time started today.  Just had everything officially submitted.  Was told typical times right now are around the 8 month mark, but can be between 6 and 10 months.

Finally got my notification today.  So took me almost 13 months.  It would be nice to no what the delay was, but happy it was finally approved.

Is it just active security clearances that appear to delay approval, or do past security clearances matter as well?

It's a roll of the dice. However, there is a consistency amongst customers I have that when there's delay, they have or have had a security clearance.  But here's an interesting one for you.

Two customers both active duty. One has a higher level of clearance than the other. Both bought suppressors from me. The one with the lower level bought first but, his came in last. The one with the higher level got approved in a few days. The lower level took a month.

No. It's a not. However, it sounds like someone made up their own rules.

I'm glad you and others are getting into suppressors. It's unfortunate that their customer service reputation isn't stellar.

Wasn't real impressed with my purchase through a local Silencer Shop kiosk dealer either. Next can I'll buy through Dreadi, he took the time to help me when the shop I bought through was giving me the run around, even though he had nothing to gain from it. Solid dude

Same local shop I used and same nightmare but worse.

 Just submitted another using Dreadi and man what a different experience! Can't speak highly enough of our local huntwa suppressor dude! I'll be purchasing all my suppressors through him going forward even being on the wrong side of the state from me

Hey Karl hope the deer hunting is going well. You may have to get a lawn chair to set out in the lake to hunt with how hot it’s supposed to be the next couple days. How many trips over the pass  did it require to get your suppressor? 1 to fill out paperwork, etc. and one to pick up? or could you do everything digitally with Dreadi and then just go over to get it when you are cleared?

Just talked with someone at silencer central regarding the 7 day notice to local law enforcement.  He said that because the silencer is be mailed, and not over the counter, that they are required to notify before shipping.

So yes, I will be using a local next time I get one.

Most everything with me is remote except for pickup. There are a few options for fingerprints including doing them yourself from home, coming to me, or any Silencer Shop dealer with a kiosk.
