My dad and I each won a Browning X-bolt 338 WM at a RMEF banquet in 2006. It has been my exclusive hunting gun ever since. It loves 225 Accubonds and shoots lights out. I run a modest 3x9 Leupold scope on it and have killed 2 moose, more than a few elk, and 5 or 6 blacktail with it. The recoil as most have said is more of a push than a slap. I also have a Ruger #1 in 7STW and it kicks way harder than the 338 in my opinion.

A friend of our family who was a big game guide in Wyoming had this to say about cartridges. He said two of the most successful cartridges his hunters used was the 30-06 and the 300win. He said clients lost more game than any other cartridge combined using the 7mm rem mag. This hurts me to say it, but he was NOT a fan of the .270win either. What was his choice of cartridge...the .338 win mag. He loved his .338. That all said, my opinion is a good shot from any of the mentioned cartridges is a dead animal. Not looking for a fight here, just wanted to add that a very successful guide chose the .338win mag, and figured I'd tell his story.

33 nosler is a great gun. I have all calibers of mark v weatherbys
30-378 is extremely accurate. Deadly and very accorate out past 1400 yds. My 338-378 is even better. Much better performance than the 338 lapua. 300 gr Berger is the most hard hitting accurate bullet i have shot out of it. Much better to shoot the 250 tactical berger. Harder shell. Better penetration less recoil. 3200+ fps. The 300 grain berger has an off the charts BC. Projectile is longer than a .556 loaded round. 250 grain. Nosler  accubond shoots great. Everything it hits tips right over.  If you want a 338 that knock them off of their feet. It will work on everything you would ever hunt. I have a 33 G&A. It performs between the 338-378 and the 338 Lapua. Bullet placement is key for any caliber. My 28 nosler is by far the most accurate caliber i have shot. 195 gr berger at 3202. I can hit a 30x30 steel plate at a mile. It also has dropped everything it has hit. 33 nosler or 33 RUM. Both are great hard hitting rounds. Less recoil and very flat shooting g with the 210 gr nosler. Well over 3000 fps with out the recoil.

I keep toying with the idea of the 338 Wby RPM. No good reason really, certainly isn't a need. Never used any 338 though, haven't even seen it on game personally. But I like its numbers, and not looking for a huge 338 Edge type round. Good performance, lightweight packages, sounds like it's pretty accurate.

Mainly use my 280AI for deer and elk. Last year used a 308 on my moose. Seems like it could be a great Alaska rifle. But is there any real difference in effectiveness from what I have to it?

Thanks

Unfortunately I don’t see the 338 RPM having longevity. It will end up getting discontinued like many well designed cartridges before it. If you do get one I’d buy 400-500 pieces of brass to go with it. I have included a link. I personally own a .338 win mag and use the 250gr Speer Grand Slam. Shot a big male black bear with it a couple years ago. He didn’t like it. Good luck.
