Favorite 10mm Handguns
« on: March 05, 2024, 08:41:22 AM »
Considering buying a 10mm handgun. I have shot smith and wesson m&ps and shoot them well, but I am concerned with reliability due to some folks complaining about failures to feed and other issues. Sounds like if you get a lemon your in for a real annoying game of troubleshoot and replacing springs and polishing the feed ramp. It's too bad since I really like the idea of this option minus the reliability.

Also considering the FN 510, I have the shot an FN in 45 and really liked it. Last option I have on the mind is Glock. Seems like the most practical and reliable choice, but overall I am not a huge glock fan.

Anyone have any strong options on this one haha? Favorites I should consider for woods carry and range shooting?

Big glock fan here. They just work.  My only complaint about the g20 is the grip is pretty wide for my hands. I gotta really hold on but practice makes perfect so it's not really a big issue.

The M&P fit my hands a lot better. Don't own one though so cannot speak to their reliability.

Good luck with whatever you end up with.

G20 – big, bulky, ugly.  Goes bang every time.  I’ve never had a failure of any kind.  Recoil is surprisingly tame.

I love glocks. They reliably cycle almost every handgun caliber, and are about as accurate as the shooter. They take a beating easily and the components are cheap to replace or upgrade. There are better guns for dumping tons of ammo comfortably at the range. If you want an EDC, especially a hiking / hunting sidearm, I know what I recommend.
What country can preserve it's liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon & pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots & tyrants.

Yeah, my buddies in Western MT have either the Glock 20 or 40. The other 10mm pistols seem like they have better ergonomics, but reliability is hard to overlook in my opinion.

I do have the Glock 43 and really like that gun. So convenient and never had any issues with it.

Don't get a kimber but it sounds like that profile is not what you are after. Know a guy who bought their 10mm had to send back to the factory numerous times before it would cycle.

My first 10 was a new G20 I bought from Carp a number of years ago.  If I recall it was my first Glock.  It was a solid piece at a reasonable price point that always went bang with anything I fed it and it shot well.  Sold that one and shortly after bought a Sig 1911 10mm which I still have.  I've shot a M&P and XD 10mm that I liked pretty well but there is just something about 1911's and how they feel in the hands that seems right about them.  That's not to say any of the others are bad but 1911's always just feel right.  I will say if I was looking for a woods backpack gun I'd take the Glock, M&P, or XD over my 1911 because of the mag capacity difference but for just shooting pleasure I like my Sig 1911 10mm better than any of the others I've shot.

Hey, where did you pick up on the negative press on the MP 10? I've had an MP 40 PC ported for a while, used it for work, before I retired I never had any issues. My son used MP 40 before the office we worked for recently went to all MP 9's with red dots. I know they are not 10s, but never had any issues.

My only experience is with HK USP 45 I carried for a while, then HK USP 40, then 1911 45, I had forgotten  how heavy a 1911 was and went back to the HK 40, before going to the MP 40, (n my younger life I carried a 1911 for a long time).

Hard to beat the grip on a MP.  I am 10mm curious, interested in any intel specifically on the MP 10.

My fav is my Colt Delta Elite......I have a G20SF and a XDMElite. They all shoot great with no issues, my preference for woods carry is the XDM.

I have the Glock G40 10mm with the 6" barrel for my bear country gun.  The slide on that thing soaks up so much recoil that heavy duty Buffalo Bore rounds are a pleasure to shoot (except for on the wallet).  The only downside is with that extra length, it is not the quickest thing to pull from a chest holster and is just overall bigger and heavier than the G20.

If the size and weight will bother you, I'd recommend the G20.  Those are the only 2 guns that would be on my list, though.

I like my g20. Always goes bang. Never shot any other 10mm. I think with a new set of sights and a timney trigger, I'd love it.
