Grande Ronde
« on: March 12, 2024, 03:20:55 PM »
Anyone here fish the Grande Ronde river?  I have my own cataraft and would LOVE to tag along and float this river sometime with someone who has their own setup, so I can see where the put in and take out is and gain river some experience.  Obviously I would be more than happy to patriciate in shuttling as well.   :hello:

I float the whitewater stretch every year. I have some buddies who float boggans down for fishing and do ok. Nothing technical just lots of wood and a long drive for us. lol.

I have fished that river for 36 straight years, probably caught a couple thousand steelhead on that river. I just got back from there. I use to use a cataraft for a year or 2, but its more of a pain in the ass as there is just so much river access from the bank and WAY too many float it anymore and all the holes are cloged up with boats. The bank spots are less crowded these days than the boat spots. The main float there is cougar creek above cottonwood creek hatchery to bogans oasis. The other and more scenic float is Bogans to shoemaker which is roadless. Bogans offers shuttle services also. We are at the time of the year tho that the steelhead have divided as the majority of OR fish are up  and the majority of WA fish are at cottonwood and below and everyday that goes by now the cottonwood area is the place to be now.

Everything huntnnw said is 100% spot on.  I've fished it since the mid 90's.  The new owner of Boggans is a coastie carpet bagger that doubled the price of shuttles.

Awesome information, thanks!!  I appreciate it.  Until I get the knees replaced, floating is the only way I'll be able to do this river.

Damn, now you've piqued my interest. I've been looking at the Grand Ronde for years and never got there. Now that I know there's Smallmouth and I'm retired, my bird dogs and I might need to go live on the land for a few weeks in September.
Are there any campgrounds above the river away from the hustle n bustle of the river? One of my bird dogs is a bit of a thief and thinks nothing of stealing food from anyone but a Mastiff.
Thanks, for any info up front.

I camped a lot during college. There are many places on the river to camp where you’ll be alone.

I'm in Fred.  I've floated Boggan's to Shumaker Rd dozens of times in catarafts and driftboats and am fully set up for either.  PM me anytime

Longtime lurker here with my first post.

Rowed it many times in my hard boat. 17' Willie

State line to Boggans: Not very technical. Makes for a nice day long trip and no driving at the end of the day if you lodge at boggans. lots of good water. My only caution would be that there is an oxbow that for a very brief time puts you back in OREGON. A WA license is not valid for that 200 yard section. It was marked well at one time. At last float the sign was shot up though. On-X is your friend here.

Boggans to Shumaker: Not overly technical, you will do some banging and clanging at low CFS in a hard boat in some spots. Absolutely stunning scenery, Bring your glass and a camera. You will see sheep on the cliffs. Watch the weather if your heart is set on this float in winter. Too much snow and ice will prevent the drivers from offering shuttles down the Shumaker grade. Its steep. 4wd recommended.  Shuttle cost as of last fall was $200.
