.
I wish the genetics were still there.
I live in the area and there is plenty of private land, restricted access, etc. to grow some serious mashers..
.
Plenty of deer, but even the backyard bucks don't seem to have the genetics of the world record.
.
Don't get me wrong, the "locals" still talk about seeing decent bucks.
But. "The King"?
.
Honestly, you hear more about big bear in people's yards at the Adna Grange than big blacktail deer.

Makes me wonder if the logging changes (herbicide spraying) have played a part in quality of animals since the record buck was taken. Can’t get the most out of genetics if the food diversity isn’t there right? FYI I’m not anti logging, just thinking out loud

Used to be a lot more oak woodland, prairie, open conifer forest, broadleaf riparian forest, and other good blacktail habitats before suburban encroachment, intensive forest management, wetland draining, more and more roads, fire suppression, etc., etc., not to mention more hunting pressure.

I've seen a good number of blacktail antlers from the 1960s and before, and they have mass and size that would be notable today!  I'm glad there are still some big bucks out there today.
