Selling used items, how much is too much?
« on: April 03, 2024, 06:33:07 PM »
I see lots of posts for equipment and other items that is usually “barely used” but often times there is no interest. My thoughts are because people are asking too much as many of us are buying these same items new everyday.

If the reason is because people are asking too much my question is how much below list price does an item need to be before you will consider buying used over buying new?

Lots of factor…..condition, rarity, how much I save in tax (high priced items), travel, wait period / travel for firearms, etc.

To many variable to say…..% savings makes it worth it.

Also….most folks will make an offer and sellers are willing to come down or negotiate.

A lot of people on here probably have all the gear they need and more, unless looking for a specialty item or something extra.

I worked in wholesale and retail sporting goods for nearly 4 decades and from what I
see is people are asking way too much for their used products.
Like Real Estate the initial price has to be close to its real value.
I chuckle at some of things listed on Hunt Wa.

I generally price items to sell. Its pretty rare I "test" the market, i hate dickering. Same with buying, i wont low ball anyone. Either I want an item or I don't , simple as that. If that item is a great deal awesome, if its not, im not waiting for one.

Its also item dependent. Clothing has a big swing for me I consider gently used clothes or boots at 50 percent to get my attention, but could be much less if its the EXACT item i am looking for. Tents or sleeping bags 30ish percent to start, Archery gear 30 for first year, dropping 5 to 10 per year after. Guns and hard gear condition dependent. But i pretty much dont even consider the hassle for less than 20 percent.

Usually two reasons people sell used items.  1) They need the money 2) they just don't use it and want to get rid of it.  Depending upon how much money you need or how badly you wanna get rid of it determines what price you put on it. Ive always set a price in my mind that I'll take and list accordingly. If I really want to get rid of I'll add obo and take what I can get. I don't look back after a sale if I get the price I wanted or got rid of something that was just taking up space

Generally speaking including other classified sites I see a lot of people attempting to sell items for 20-30% off list or in some cases you can find new for the same cost as they are asking.

Typically if I buy something used it needs to be around 50% off, near by and in good condition.

When I sell items I usually list them for at least 50% off and if I don’t think it is worth the hassle I just throw it away.

So you wouldn’t purchase a 1k rifle for 700 if it were a rifle you wanted?

50% is a steep discount for some items.  I get it if it is used clothing or gear that otherwise depreciates more rapidly like archery gear.   But other items Don’t depreciate as much or as fast.

That rifle pricing is fairly realistic......I think Cabelas buys guns at 65% of fair market value.

If I wanted a gun that bad it’s already in my safe. Years ago I bought a bunch of guns anytime it was a good deal and now I still have them taking up space in the safe and some of them I have never even shot. Gums would probably need to be more than 50% off before I would consider buying but that’s mostly because I’m not in the market for any these days.

I used to buy and sell storage lockers, it’s amazing to watch people shop your stuff at a swap meet. One man’s garbage is another’s one’s treasure. It’s only worth what someone is willing to pay. Some stuff was too valuable to sell there, so I had to find other ways to sell it.

I think you answered your own question….  Items are worth what a person is willing to pay.  I’m sure lots of folks would love 30% off a rifle….because you have plenty, you wouldn’t buy another in less it was a steep discount (or you would just pay full price if you really wanted one).  Same could be said by many folks on here….i don’t need another .22lr semi auto, but if someone was giving it away I would gladly add it to the collection.

I was actually at Cabela’s today and saw a pair of Sitka pants that I wanted that has exactly what I’m looking for. As someone who owns Sitka already I know it’s value and my thought was “I will be able to get these on sale for 25-30% off soon” so my thoughts on Sitka gear is knowing it goes on sale a couple times a year it would need to be in the 60% off before it’s worth buying used. And to be honest I see stuff that if the price is right I would replace some of my older gear but I would feel bad countering someone so much lower than they are asking.

Even when it says obo I don’t want to insult someone who really thinks their stuff is worth what they are asking for it.

In my experience buying and selling on the forum, I won’t see a question or offer until 40% below MSRP. That is not just this forum. Unless it is a hot item, primers or powder. High end camo takes less of a hit sometimes. Condition is also a major factor.

The Hunt WA Clan is “thrifty” for sure  :chuckle:  Run your items for sale here first to give a HW brother a good deal (and they’re great to work with), but after a bit with no sale, on to Craig’s  List, etc….

There are a few exceptions- some guns, vehicles, boats- if a used item is more than 50% of a new one, I’m buying the new one. I’m always surprised at the number of people who put things for sale without doing any research. I was looking at another site a few days ago & someone was trying to sell a used bow for $300 more than the same bow new from Scheel's

In retail for over 30 years, you want to appeal to a wide audience go 50% off.

And I just bought that $209 pair of pants for $84 delivered to my house. Plus I got the matching coat for 50% off.

I think I’m going to lower my requirements for used Sitka to 75% off.

Looks like Sitka is working on closing out some of last years stock if anyone is interested.

This is always the case.   I have never bought new model year sitka gear.   They sell previous years gear at steep discounts.  If your a weird size…..you can find even better deals.   This with new (tag on) gear.

First, Google the item and find the lowest price on the internet because that's what the potential buyer is doing. Some of it is the individual's lack of marketing. Whenever I see an ad without pictures, I just move along. How the product is described makes a difference. Also, the willingness of the seller to ship is a biggie. They don't have to ship for free and no one expects that unless it's part of the deal. But when you're dealing with a state as large as ours and the item is "P/U in Pullman only", you're canceling out 999/1000s of your prospects. Unfortunately, Amazon has turned us into instant gratification shoppers. You need to be able to compete with that. Knowing that UPS and FedEx Ground will deliver overnight (business days) fairly cheaply from and to almost any zip code within the state, can make a difference in the attraction to the item you're selling for potential buyers. I've had pretty good luck when I've sold stuff on here. Know your audience.

My garage has been filling up for the past 20 years.......gonna have to flea market it this coming summer. Did one in 2003-04 and it was pretty much a matter of "Well, how much do you want to pay for it.....name a price and take it, fer krissakes.....don't make me buy it for you!!!!!" When I decide to sell something, no price is too low.

I have some stuff I need to get rid of and when it shows up on here my hope is it will be gone within the day. If not I must have really been holding onto some junk.
