NE turkey report

Certainly a different year than most.  Spring is at least two weeks earlier than usual with every thing in blossom and underbrush leafed out.  Birds are pretty much out of their winter groups and heavily henned up.  Not seeing birds in a lot of the usual places and seeing them in places we don't normally see em.  Personally not seeing many up high yet, but haven't spent much time up there either. All roads in good shape.  That time when you get lots of call answers but tough to break em away from their harem, except of course for the Jake's. We got our birds fine, but had to work a little harder than usual.  Haven't seen a ton of hunters, but expect that will change this weekend. Enjoy, certainly a beautiful time of year to be out and about.

Yes, 26 here at the house this morning.  Bring your warm clothes for mornings as forecast says no rain but chilly mornings the next few days.  Got hailed on yesterday.

Opening day here today in MN snow in the forecast tomorrow and Friday.  Very dry and brown here.  Just got some rain yesterday but they are still in very high fire danger.  Very little turkey activity

Lots of ticks this year.
Dry,warmer ,spring.
TICKS are CRAZY WILD!
Definitely keep that in mind.

my son got a nice big tom. real cold in the morning and windy in the afternoon. I think we got more ticks then we saw turkeys.

Got into curlew last night - hunted kinda high this morning didn’t see a single bird - saw a ton driving in last night all on private. Gonna have to change up game plan a bit and hopefully locate some on public?

Was out Sunday afternoon/evening, all day Monday and Tuesday morning and didn't see a single tick. I sprayed the heck out of all my gear with Permethrin, maybe it works. I hiked, sat and belly crawled through grass in both Lincoln and Stevens Counties.

Just across the border in Idaho. 2 of us never sprayed and never saw a tick. Got 2 Toms on Monday, they were hot but when that cold front came in Monday night it shut them off on Tuesday. Luckily still got 2 more on Tuesday but it was some work

In my defense,
I'm walking a lot of deer/elk trails /Camara checks.
That may have a higher than normal ungulate activities.
So it may just seem like the ticks are very bad.
But who knows.

Seems to be localized, been out and about a lot the last couple weeks and haven't seen one yet.  I always spray down after I see the first one, but no need yet

Things have been quiet around Colville. Havent heard a single hen this trip and far less gobbles than last year. The gobblers I have heard dont seem interested in playing ball. I see turkeys in the field just huddled up, toms arent strutting.Thursday afternoon was cold, windy, partially cloudy, and some light sleet and rain. Cold mornings. More rain coming Sunday. I think this weather system has the birds uninterested in breeding. I've seen lots of other hunters and only heard a few shots the past two days. Everybody we've talked to says theyre not hearing anything.

About 60 ticks found between 2 hunters in one day. I would say crazy tick year. Luckily non one stuck that we found. Still twitchy and checking though.
