Moose Rifle?

I am headed to Canada this fall for my first moose hunt and not sure what rifle to bring. I am not a guy that owns a bunch of rifles so unless I borrow one, I was planning on taking my .270 and 150g ammo. Thoughts?

Took my last bull in AK with my .270 with 140 gr bullets. Went less than 10 yards. Normally carried a .338 but mostly because of grizzlies. They generally just stand there when you shoot them; it’s not uncommon to question yourself if you even hit them.

I have killed 3 bulls in BC with my .338 mag and 225 grain accubonds. I have also taken two bulls in Alaska with my .270 and 130 grain bullets. I have a couple of friends in Alaska who have always used .270 with 150 grain bullets for moose every year and have each killed grizzly with same gun.

   Moose die pretty easy, that .270 will be plenty. When I went to Canada the guide was happy with that caliber and was more concerned that I had bonded bullets. With that being said I still bought and used a 300WSM because it was a good excuse to.

.270 will be fine, especially with 150 grain bullets.  As some others have said, I would pay the exra needed to use bonded bullets, or at least Nosler Partition.  Moose are usually not extremely tenacious of life, but they are BIG, often take awhile to expire, and lots of penetration is a good thing.

The 150s I have shot in the past are federal fusions but I have no issue buying a few boxes of other rounds to see what shoots the best.

You can’t go wrong with accubonds

I think bullet construction is more important that bullet weight in this case.  130 gain accubond would win out over a 150 grain nosler ballistic tip as one example. 
 

Accubond, partition, federal trophy bonded, etc. 


If this bullet shot well....It would be at the top of my list for factory ammo.

You’ll have a 300wm with 180hh beside you if you start to get one ounce of hesitation in the brain at crunch time.   You’ll be fine.

Those fusions will be just fine! Keep shooting it in the lungs till it goes down. If your fast you can get a few.

Bullet placement and construction are key. Used a .375 H and H with 300 grain Nosler Partitions for my OIL Moose tag in Washington last year. As others have stated when hit they do not go far and may act like they are not hit. My shot was through the lungs at less than 100 yards and he took off like I missed. Less than 50 yards and he went down and stayed down. Best of luck on your hunt it will be fun!
