Attached is an Excel file with the 2023 elk harvest results. I find these helpful to evaluate permit opportunities by comparing odds of drawing (permits divided by applicants) and harvest results between various hunts in a category.

These stats may be close BUT, there are a lot of hunters that bite the $10 and do not report.

Looking at the spread sheets ballpark just under 20% don’t report on their special permit success so over 80% are reporting

Total Applicants   Permits Issued   Reports Returned   Hunters   Hunter Success   Antlerless Harvest   Antlered Harvest   Total Harvest
   406               10                          6                    5                   60%              3                          0                           3

So reading this report, Does this mean that 1 hunter did not hunt? 6 returned but only 5 hunters?? BTW 6 of 10 reports is not good for the future of permits being issued.

Interesting just how many quality tags go unfilled. Granted the numbers of tags are less. No one is taking any mule deer in the northeast units except a single buck in the Pend Oreille unit. It used to be advertised that the Northeast corner was a premier whitetail hunt during the late season. But everyone is still running to the sales counter to support the wdfw.

I always figured guys successful on quality tags are more likely to report. There’s always those guys who draw tags and never step foot in the unit. I know a guy who drew a Montana governors bison tag last year and didn’t even bother hunting.

The game dept. math sucks.  how is this 100% success                                                                                                                                              Total Applicants    Permits Issued    Reports Returned    Hunters    Hunter Success    Antlerless Harvest    Antlered Harvest                                4,724                       15              13                             11                   100%                                0                                11

District 1
Looks like huckleberry is still king, only GMU still holding decent harvest numbers.
All the other GMU in district 1 seem low to me.
Or huckleberry being so high just puts it to shame.
Talking deer general season.

As for permits,I don't really need to look at harvest reports.
If drawn I plan on hunting it,not selected is so high probability.
No need to look at harvest rate.

Based on the 13 reports they received back, there were 11 hunters and 11 animals killed. So 100% of the reported hunters filled their tag.

I am not always convinced that the harvest statistics are 100% spot on.  I know, for fact, that one of the elk categories had at least twice the number of harvest than is being reported.   Perhaps we should take the harvest statistics as "ball park"? ha ha

I don't know why people get so hung up on these reports. They are based on the honor system and self-reporting, of course they're not 100% dead-nuts accurate. They are a best-guess estimate taking those who do report and extrapolating that across the total number of tag holders. An indicator of trends, that's it.

You are 100% correct.  But, the only caveat is that for OIL and for low permit number draws, it really helps me decide which hunts to put in for as I usually review the prior 5 years of harvest statistics to see if harvest trends warrant me throwing my points at.  I have stopped putting in for a couple of areas because the reported harvest numbers have dropped significantly or harvest went to 0.  There is also the component of hunter days which gives me a great idea of what effort it might take me to harvest.  Most of the OIL and quality hunts we are all flying blind into them and always start my research with the harvest info.  It is self reported/honor system and seriously appreciate those who report especially in the quality and OIL categories.

There's an option on the reports that say "did not hunt" so the report has been returned but you're not going to be factored into the harvest success if you didn't try.

Was just looking at quality deer permits for NE WASHINGTON.
Doesn't look like very many get filled.
Only 2 harvest for the whole district.
A lot of didn't even get hunted.
Figured I'd look.
