June 28th Salmon Neah Bay???
« on: June 14, 2009, 03:11:54 PM »
The joys of the summer, getting ready to head over to the westside for a family visit, planning on staying until around 4th July. I think I'm going to take the boat with me when I go so I will have a 17' alumaweld and I may end up wondering out to Neah Bay for some black bass a possible ling and even maybe a coho or chinook.

What kind of luck have people had out there with salmon this early in the year? I have always had great luck with bottom fish but have never been much of a salmon guy, my buddy that would be going with me is just the opposite but never ventured farther north of Seku. Any tips on how and where to target salmon out of Neah Bay at the end of June would be great, in return I will come back with pictures and stories  :chuckle:

Fishing should be good for kings, and silvers that time of year. Cut plugged herring or candlefish would be my bait of choise. Slow troll the ripps or mooch the kelpbeds..

Don't forget a cut plug! I assume your going to stay inside. I'll be up there at Sekiu around that time. The nice thing about Neah Bay (area 4) is that your Kings don't have to be clipped. At least that's the way it was.

So there is not Quote in area 5 Sekiu??? I got a hold of the region 6 office and the quote for area 4 was met on the 4th of this month so they are not going to open it again this season.

This is a pink year so it says you can retain an additional 2 pinks, is there any chance to get into those the end of June?  :dunno:

Any crabbing around Neah Bay, maybe on the inside or back side of Wada Island?  :dunno: I like to have as much going as I can when I get the time to get to go out and play  :chuckle:

Don't waste your time crabbing around Neah. I use a protroll sting king lure in 5.5" in herring color and do quite well with it. I would try Waada about mid island in 150' of water fishing between 25' and 80'. Personally I run out about 12 mi. S.W. of Tatoosh in 250' of water and fish the same depths. 4 limits in two days by 2:00. the next day was three kings by 10:00 by Waada where I described. There is also the red can out by Duncan Rock just N.W. of Tatoosh could provide some good Coho action. If the weather is bad you can also try by the Mushroom rock just inside of Tatoosh. Hope this helps. Brian

that sounds great...

Where is the trash pile at Neah Bay, I have been told that it is also a good kind area.
I will try that area in front of Wada this Saturday, I figure I will be out there at first light, may even run out with the lights on just to get first crack at the kings.

The garbage dump is basically a halibut area. If no luck at Waada try working the shore line just inside Tatoosh. There is also a little bay just south of tatoosh. run out the south side of tatoosh watch the rocks, stay in the middle of the channel, go about 1/2 mi should be a little bay you can work that area, you might pick up a chinook there. Have fun. They also have a new pizza place with wood fired ovens, good pizzas. Have fun

Well I'm picking up my buddy today and we are going to be heading to Neah Bay this afternoon, hopefully be able to get into some Kings, maybe a local silver or even some pinks. Besides that the bottom fishing is always good. I have my camera with so I should get some good pics.

I agree a 17' is not 100% ideal. I have been fishing it for bottom fish since I was a wee little kid, I have been out there in boats that I should not have been, one was a rental from big salmon, a 14' boat with no windshield and a 15 hp motor, way to small, still got my limits.  :chuckle:

Went up Friday night, got there around 11:30, asleep around 1:00, up at 4:00.  :chuckle: We where out off of Wada at 4:45 in about 225' of water and we starting trolling West, 45 minutes later I started playing with another rod in the boat thinking of casting for some black bass when one of the down rigger rods in the boat went limp and almost instantly the rod had line pulling on it, never had a fish rip throw a clip so fast on a down rigger and keep going. Got the rod and started to reel, I felt the fish for about 5 seconds and the line went limp  :bash: Got it in and it had bit clean throw a 30 pound leader. I was using a e-chip herring helmet and the line broke just above it. I don't know if a shark took it but if it was a king it was a nice one. Besides that no salmon, saw one guy get about a 20 pounder mooching.

As for bottom fish my buddy and I caught 4 ling, all 1/2" to small, one canary rock, had to let it go, a greenling and a china rock, all said and done not much cleaning at the dock.

Wildlife, we saw three whales, a sea lion, couple seals, a cougar crossed HWY 113 on us!!! and a crap load of deer on the way up to Neah Bay including a couple really nice bucks.

WE WENT HOME EARLY, out on the water Saturday we where checked my three game wardens, two coast guard, a Clallum County Sheriff, and an Indian Cop!!! All on the water. The Game department rammed my boat when they came up on me and almost busted my down rigger arm, flexed it all the way to the freaken boat, there boat actually left a 6" black mark down the side of my boat.  >:( Then they wanted to write me and my buddy tickets because we where fishing with barbed hooks, the kicker is we where fishing off the fingers out in front of Wada in 45' - 70' of water bottom fishing for ling!!! When they left in there 24' zodiac with two 250 HP engines they actually gunned it circling my boat and almost swamped me,  >:( I was pissed. When we went in the second coast guard guy was checking boats for safety gear, got lucky there the guy behind me got it good  :o expired flares, expired air horn, small rip in the life jacket making it no good, on and on, I thought the guy was going to cry. My buddy and I decided not to stick around and bottom fish more on Sunday because the way we where being watched we knew we would accidentally do something wrong and end up with tickets so we busted camp and got out of there.  ;)

Area 5 was no better for Halibut, we only scraped up one small fish. The Coast Guard was out in force on Sunday. We got boarded and luckily everything checked out. Another guy had his motor bumped twice and when he bitched they boarded him and made him drive in to the dock where they tore through everything, no ticket. I wonder what their problem is. The Coast Guard that checked us were totally cool but thorough. Last weekend there were 18 Makah trollers in front of Sekiu and the rumor was they went a little over their quota (big surprise, but only a rumor) that may have something to do with the fishing now. Oh well still a good time on the water.

That's how I look at it too sometimes the fish gods don't let us take what we want, but still a good time on the water, better than working and time behind a desk which is all that I am doing right now!!!!! :bash:

They rent 14' boats at big salmon, but yes I get nervous when the weather gets bad.
