I returned to the where I last saw this flock this am and sat in a blind . My mistake was I was not close enough to pick out the toms from the jakes or see them clearly as the flock moved through the clear cut feeding which has a bunch of growth and small trees . Consequently I shot a Jake which I didn't want to . I know it's legal but I prefer killing a mature bird . Had I pinpointed the spot & set up closer along the logging road where the they were crossing each day I could have distinguished between the toms & Jakes and make a better shot . By the way I dropped the Jake in his tracks at 45 yards as I was using Federal TSS shells . They are an impressive load . I do have a question about my experience with this flock of birds I have run across the past couple of weeks . Is it unusual for this group to be together during the first week of May ?

It seems that the birds on the west side are running a little late this year. The Easterns I have been after are just starting to get active in the mating game. Probably do to the cooler weather we have been having. Don't be sad about a jake, some years it just seems like that's all a person can do. Jakes still eat good. Nice job!
