Use of points during special tag drawings
« on: May 05, 2024, 11:12:14 AM »
If a person with multiple points for deer, puts in for both a Buck deer tag and a Quality deer tag, does their existing points get used for both or if you by chance get drawn for the Buck deer tag first, are your points used and gone when they're drawing for the Quality deer tag?
I guess the question should be, is it better to put in only for the deer tag you want the most?

My understanding is that you accumulate points for each special permit selected, so quality deer and buck deer points are separate. Successful draw for one does not deplete the other.

With WDFW’s category system points are specific to each category. Buck, quality, antlerless, second deer, etc..

So in the event you draw in a category those points go to 0. The other category’s applied too and not drawn maintain their accumulated points.

 :yeah:

That way they should be getting money out of you for every category.

Had all my buck deer points used last year when I drew Lick Creek (BTW really fun hunt if you guys can ever get it).

...but still 24 quality deer points to my name because the state hates me and will never allow me to draw quality.

Everything's separate these days so they can generate more $$.  Wasn't the case growing up, but then they figured out they could make some money so here we are.  I still have 10 points for stuff like youth deer, 65+ deer, antlerless deer from back when the split happened.

Worse odds and more money… I think that is the WDFW moto 😂😂

Each category has their own separate points. WDFW draws are maximized for profit, not opportunity.

There is no downside risk of applying for multiple categories now.  Originally, if you drew multiple categories, you could hunt both permits, however you'd lose your points in both but still only be able to harvest one animal.  A lot of hunters whined about it, and now you can return any permit you want 2 weeks prior to the starting date and get your points restored for that category - for any reason.

So now, everyone may as well apply for every category just in case you might want to hunt it. If you decide you don't want to as the season gets closer, just return the permit.  This further tanked odds.  A terrible idea with no foresight by the squeaky wheel hunters who somehow beat the odds and drew multiple in the same year.

I think I'm over 20 points now in quality bull/bull categories.  Never did risk applying for both categories at the same time, but since the rule change, I do every year.  I'm sure I'm not the only one, and it certainly hurts the odds for everyone.

Ya really sucked when father and I burned all our cow points the year we drew quality elk. I wished  then  we could return one of the tags but in all honesty a better system would be once you draw in  an animal category like deer or elk your out of the rest of the draws it would improve odds , I would even go as far to say once you draw any tag you are out of the rest of the draws for everything. Tag numbers have dropped horribly and still every year some people draw multiple tags
