Gun problems
« on: May 11, 2024, 12:18:53 AM »
Anybody ever ran into a muzzle loader that’s under bored? Bullet goes down great with a clean barrel but any fouling at all and the bullet won’t seat on the powder no matter how hard you try. After messing around with a few different bullet types took it to our gun guy to see if he could figure it out. After a few attempts at trying he did some measuring and figured out the gun is under bored. Not real sure where to go from here.

50 cal??  Sabots??   If so what bullets and what sabots?  You can buy different sabots that may help.  You can also buy .452 bullets if you’re currently trying .458.   Point is, I would play with other bullet and sabot combos to see if I could find a combo that works.

What did the bore measure?  What muzzleloader are you using?

Try some different sabots and bullets, they vary quite a bit. Thor bullets are made in several sizes and you can buy a test pack to see what fits your bore.

It’s a TC impact. Been awhile since I messed with it in a few years can’t remember all the different bullets we tried and can’t remember what it was under bored. Wasn’t a whole lot just enough that once it’s fouled the bullet sticks right before it hits the powder. I’ll look into Thor bullets. Have heard the bor lock bullets load really easy was thinking about trying those. Had kinda wrote the gun off and put it in safe to live it’s life.

Had trouble with different sabots when I switched brands. Same bullet, new sabot I could barely get it started and down the bore.
It sounds like you are using the same bullet without a sabot?
Do you think there could be some corrosion in the bore where it stops and hangs up?

I don't know much about the TC Impact, but generally muzzleloader bores vary quite a bit, even within the same model of rifle. Therefore there are lots of different sized bullets and sabots designed to different specs to fit the varying size of ".50" cal muzzleloaders.  You are going to have to do some research into the bullets to find out the exact specs on the different bullets/sabots available.

If it gets that tight seating a bullet I would start to be concerned of over pressurizing.  can you get the barrel honed a few thou?
