Tiller to remote conversion
« on: May 16, 2024, 08:54:46 AM »
How hard would it be to convert a 9.9 tiller to remote if I have a donor motor? Boat is set up for remote but kicker has a rod knock. Found another similar model kicker with tiller for a decent price. I've heard it's not worth the time and cost but didn't know if having a parts donor motor already set up remote changed anything

Depends on the motor.

It could be worth just tackling the rod bearing. Assuming it's replaceable like most cars, it might not be horribly inaccessible depending on the engine. Lots of cars you just take the oil pan off and can replace most of them. It might be a one day job on an outboard but I really don't know.

Depends on the motor.

2006 Merc 9.9 power tilt. I have spoken with a couple other shops since this post that also told me it is not worth the time/cost and to just nut up for a new motor. If I had the time I'd probably try to tackle the rod bearing myself before spending the 4k on a new setup but unfortunately I just don't have that kind of time available
