I fear the rut is all but over and he’s vanished into no man’s land. No sighting last night, this morning or this even. Thinking one more day of sitting on his haunts and then the drainage dance starts again.

I think the exact opposite is the case…..the rut is in full swing and he bred the cows and may have moved on.   The bull moose we hunt in Canada will breed a cow or harem of cows and then travel looking for new cows.  Every time they find a hot cow, we figure 72 hours before the deed is done and they move on.   Try calling…..if he is in the area, he should respond.

Both times we tried calling at him he freezes up like froze move nothing but his head for almost an hour then got dark. Threw out some cow calls right at dark tonight and then going to get there an hour or so before light and throw some more. What made me think it’s over is I haven’t heard any bull grunts the last two days.

Did that and raked just stood there and looked. Maybe like he’s been called to before. Acted more like an elk than a love/anger crazed moose.

He just isn’t wanting to leave his cow.   When he breeds her, he will come.  Patients will pay off……may a bull we called and they never came in, just for a day or two later, the come charging in.   

It will happen.

Pretty dismal week. Seen a good bull Monday morning (guessing it was the target bull) heading off over the hill to be unhuntable. Since then been all cows and bulls I’d feel bad shooting. Rut activity is zero. Pretty sad to hear stories from the past of big bulls in almost every drainage or even of multiple big bulls being pulled out if one drainage. Sounds like there’s other tag holders that are even having a tough time seeing a moose, pretty tough time to be a moose and even tougher being a moose hunter in these parts. Guess I just count my luck stars I had the opportunity two see two bulls worthy if taking home and to have seen moose as much as I have. Thinking I may check out of moose hunting this weekend to head home regroup and head to idaho to elk hunt.

So often there will be good grunting and rutting into late October. Don't write it all off just because the drainage cooled off for a bit.

Next weeks weather is going to be good for you, much cooler with chance of rain will get them moving.  Last year in 49 north it was warm the first 9 days and it was slow,  day 10 it was cool and rainy and I killed m bull and saw other good bulls.  You have an OIL tag you get can get an Idaho elk tag any time.

My thoughts too.....no way, no how, I would leave a moose hunt to chase elk in Idaho.  Well, unless I had a group of other guys relying on me being in Idaho....but I would hope my friends would understand my absence.  If I was on a time frame, I wouldn't be picky with size of bull.  If I had the time....I would hunt hard till I got it done.  WA has very nice / big moose in it, just takes a little luck and a lot of hard hunting.
