Nooksack
« on: June 13, 2024, 05:02:59 AM »
Finally drew Nooksack muzzy after 15 years, now I'm hearing it's not nearly the unit it once was.  Is it that bad?  Any recommendations on where to focus?  Private land down low or is timber land a better bet?

Thanks

I had that tag last year. Don’t want to burst your bubble but it was terrible !!! Mod rifle 10 days 1 cow. I went back the late season and found a guy who let me hunt his place on the river west side. Got a4x5 there opening day. His dogs ripped up my elk !!! No bad damage !! In 2017 it was a hot unit. Not now !! I can give you 2 land owners that might let you hunt. PM if your interested

If you see a decent bull shoot it.

Get up high and off the main logging roads I grew up in the418 unit and have seen hundreds of elk in that unit. My buddy got drawn for it in 2009 and killed a 350 class 8x8. Hike into the worst spot possible and you will find the big bulls

Its not the same unit it was in 2009.  But yea high and deep or farmer permission low.  You have a 70% chance of eating tag.

There are still a lot of elk and some very, very nice bulls in there, but it's no Slam Dunk and you will earn your bull. It amazes me how many people eat this tag because they think it's going to be easy.

Every year I keep reading how bad it is and it was so much better in years past, and that's a true statement, but there are still so many bulls in there and some absolute studs, it's just not super easy. The archery hunt is far harder than the muzzy permit because it's a bit early, but still doable, especially the last few days of the early season. The early muzzy is fantastic and hits it just right. It's a great draw for a chance at a mature bull.

Whoever said either the fields or up higher is spot on. You just need to get away from the 50 or so individuals packing rifles that could care less that you have a bow and will shoot them at your feet. But for the most part, they're only on the roads so you can get away from them.

Good Luck !! It's gorgeous country up higher.

The biggest problem you will have not finding bulls is when you take full advantage of the gate key you receive and never leave the truck! This tag is still awesome with plenty of big bulls. Get deep, find the furthest place away from a gravel road! Good Luck!

You'll have a blast. Not great for any size, but a much easier hunt.

Mudflow was my first choice.  It'll work out better as it's much closer to home.

My Nooksack tag is now a mudflow tag.
My buddy had the same thing happen. Mudflow 1st, Nutsack 2nd. WDFW just switched it on him.
