School Me on Muzzleloaders
« on: June 14, 2024, 11:03:05 AM »
I've been muzzleloader hunting off and on since 2017 and have harvested a handful of deer and an elk. I've been using a Cabela's special Traditions Evolution throughout this, and while I have no complaints about it, I've always desired something different. Over the years I've considered picking up a knight ultralight, CVA Optima, or a Remington 700MZ but have never been able to bring myself to pull the trigger on buying any of them. With the new allowance of 1x scopes and drawing both a deer and elk tag this season the desire is growing.

What features does everyone like? Is there a hidden gem MZ out there I should consider? Anything I should stay away from in my searches? Or am I just being greedy and I should live by the old adage of "if it's not broke don't fix it" and stick with my evolution?

Thanks everyone

Honestly if it has worked for you why switch now? But, I like Knight guns. They seem to be one of the best fitting guns for me. I also like using  Lehigh bullets recommend by sabotloader (just search the internet and you should find links for his stuff). They do will drop animals in their tracks more often than not, especially deer.

No experience personally, but I hear the Remington ultimate muzzy, is very well built. I shoot a 45 cal knight mountaineer that I’ve had good luck with. The nice thing about the Remington is there is a lot of after market parts you can add to them. I’m not sure what you’re after, but the long range muzzy world is just as expensive as the long range rifle realm.

Knight ultra lite is my favorite and disc extreme a close second
Ultra lite = very light for packing around and very accurate
Disc extreme = little heavier ( longer barrel) and just as accurate

It's unfortunate that Knight when absolutely insane on their pricing. I was ready to pull the trigger on a .45 cal ultralight then saw they went from $950 to $1,630!!!!

Midway USA still has some of their knight ultralites priced down around $1000.00  Would imagine once their gone the price will go up.  Free shipping and you don't pay the Federal excise tax that Knight charges you for.

That's awesome midway still has them reasonably priced for the ultralight. I have a couple buddies who hunt with them so it's been a strong contender for years.

The Remington I would buy in a heart beat if it wasn't for the weight. I just don't want to lug around a 8.5+lb rifle when there's very solid options in the 6lb range. If I was standing hunting sure.

The Leigh bullets I've heard good things about. I currently hunt with the Barnes TMZ. I switched to those in 2017 when a drew a Turnbull antlerless tag and if you didn't have a full copper bullet you had to carry out the guy pile also. I have Turnbull again this year and after plenty of successful harvests I can't see me switching away from them.
