Desert Unit Rifle in October Tag
«
on:
June 15, 2024, 07:41:07 AM »
After 20 years I finally drew the Desert tag for rifle in October. Excited to see what I might bump into out there. I’ve helped a friend that drew the November tag 2 years in a row back in 2017 and 18. The second time he drew it with a hunters Ed instructor tag. Lots of scouting planned to be ready to hit the ground running.

Great tag. Not to be a Debbie downer but the quality seems to be dropping every year. 18 was a great year for quality bucks. Last year we were hard pressed to pass a 175” buck.

2014 Desert October hunt. Just tell yourself you are going to hold out because you are going to see some big bucks

I should have a good idea of what to hold out for after all of the pre hunt scouting I plan on doing. I’m excited just for the chance to see multiple legal bucks in a day. I don’t get much of that where I normally hunt.

It was a great hunt. I probably saw around 60 bucks. About 55 of them were a 3 point or less. I shot this medium 4x5 on day 6. Not as big as I was hoping but, it was a great spot and stock to get within 75 yards. Also my brother got to watch it play out. Need a friend to get this tag so I can use all my experience in this unit.

Hey, well done. That can be a tough hunt. I know the bodies on those deer can be really big. Glad you enjoyed the experience and made a great stalk and clean kill on a good buck.

Thanks everyone. I did get the most meat I’ve ever got from an animal. I think it was a combination of minimal damage to the shoulder and a big deer. I’ll be curious to get the age from the tooth I submitted.
