Chiwawa Deer!
« on: June 13, 2024, 11:04:11 AM »
To see that i was selected for this hunt was a shocker to me as its the 2nd quality tag for me in 5 years. I cant wait to start scouting the unit and putting a hunt plan together.

This is not a where do i go post or hey i got this tag and never been in the area post. I  know my profile is newer and that's only because i couldn't get into my old one @throttlejocky20  and just started a new one. But i have never been in the unit this time of year. I know the road's can be sketchy and its a very snow dependent hunt. If anyone wants to share their past experience with this unit during the late season i'm all ears.

Looking over this site and others gathering all the information i can as well as scheduling scouting trips this summer is the start and i plan to keep you all updated of all the highs and lows throughout this hunt.

No real details but my buddy got drawn for that unit last year and got his. The weather obviously can have a huge impact there. Plenty of big cat activity there too. Have fun and good luck

I grew up in the late 60s, early 70s, 200 yards up stream of where the Chiwawa river runs into the Wenatchee river. My family always hunted Garland and Basalt peak early and then Maverick Saddle and up the Mad river if/and/or once the migration started. I was told years ago by a guy that put on waders, crossed the Chiwawa at Atkinson flats and hunted the slope above on the west side of the river. Said it was a hunters haven with nary a soul.
There's just so much good country in there to cover but remember, the buck you're looking for, when you're looking for him may not be where you see him in August and September. Years ago while fishing Fish lake with the kids, we had two of the biggest Mule deer bucks I've seen walk across the Chiwawa river road in front of the truck. They were right down near the cabins along the lake in mid August. If financially and athletically possible, if it was me, since it's possibly a once in a lifetime opportunity, outfitter into the high country where the big boys live right after the general season closes.
Good luck, I'm so Jealous!!!

Thanks for the input most of my scouting will not really be looking for bucks but does. Hoping that the bucks will still be in the vicinity or they go into a second estrus end of November. I have no expectations but extremally excited.

If it's Nov 1 thru 20th, you should be smack dab in the middle of the rut. When I was a kid, we hunted right up to thanksgiving. I remember seeing herds of 30-40 deer with multiple large antlered, swollen necked bucks, amongst the herd standing in the middle of the Minnow Creek road. Those days are gone but the rut should be the same basic time give or take a few days based on weather.

With regards to the original post I am the one that drew the tag and back on my original account.
Remember that buck is climbing that Mt. every day!

Glad we got you back on track with your original account. Lots of posts from that account.

I had this tag kind of a few years ago. Hunter ed incentive tag that was good in entiat and chiwawa at the same time.

I hunted the east side of the unit as I was bouncing back and forth between the two.

Actually saw a really nice bull moose in Chiwawa. I thought the roads in Chiwawa were better than entiat.  Get high and glass or drive the roads is what I did.
Pain is temporary, achieving the goal is worth it.

I didn't say it would be easy, I said it would be worth it.
