Idaho unit 30A?
« on: June 25, 2024, 11:22:07 PM »
I was 1 of the 5 non residents to pull this tag. Iam familiar with the country as I have archery hunted the MT side. Looking to see if anyone on here has spent time in 30A . I would like to pick your brain on access into the unit.

I'll be in 30 and 30A for regular season (30A deer tag, salmon b elk tag) - give a shout in late Oct/early Nov and I can give you some recent beta.  You have late elk muzzy?  Late should be good as I think the 30A elk herd is mostly migratory and only comes into Idaho from Montana when the snow pushes them lower

I have the late muzzy tag, I get Nov 1-30. Sounds like there is some resident elk on the ID side but then there can be a influx of elk with snow on the MT side .

30 isn’t in the salmon zone it’s draw only

Nevermind - I was mistaken... I'll be in 21 and 21A.  Probably got confused because it has an A in it.

May buddy who moved to Idaho some years ago drew a Moose tag this year in 30 A. We will be in there end of October to mid November.

Might have to trade numbers , if I see a bull moose I could get ahold of you . I’ll be there every weekend plus a week in the middle

Well I’m back from my hunt and it was a crazy one. Got to camp the first day with about a hour of light left and saw 3 bulls right above camp and 5 more north of camp. Next day I stalked the 5 bulls with a 3.5 mile stalk to peak over ridge to see them bedded still and the wind switched and gone. Got to camp that night with high winds! Tent was holding up, that was when I was woken up to even higher winds to the point I thought if the tent went down if I could find zipper to door to get out. I decided to get in my truck as I was not going to be able to sleep. It’s blowing so hard that it’s shaking my Ram diesel truck I look over and tent looks weird, I get out and realize a pole separated then went down and ripped a 6’ hole in roof! There goes an expensive tent (Montana canvas) relite model. I try to sleep and wake up 3 am to a blizzard and winds only blowing 30-40mph now. Forecast was up to 1” and not 1” every 30 min. Mind you I have a sxs and trailer in and now I thinking I gotta get outta here before I get drifted in. I packed up camp at 4am in a blizzard ! 15 deg and 40 mph winds. Made it to highway and start googling lodging options . I found a Airbnb right in my unit and booked it. Next 2 days it got real nice  :chuckle: -6 mornings , then more wind . Stalked 2 bulls to 40 yards and to only have the cap go off ! Saw about 200-250 elk then 1.5 days I couldn’t find a elk. By chance I stopped and glassed a hill on way back to room and found 59 elk bedded by the highway. After 5.5 hours of belly crawling I was 136 yards from herd and shot 1 of the bulls. Next day was 51 deg and I bought ice for meat in coolers  :chuckle:

I learned I won’t apply there again as I thought you could at least turn up a 270 6x6. Are there some around ? I’m sure. The amount of country you can glass from the flats is insane. I spent hours a day tearing apart that country . I saw 1 elk hunters in 6 days. The roads are minimal and I was the only person on them most days. Great hunt if opportunity is your thing .

What an adventure. I'm glad you got out safely and got an elk.

Weather can change in a flash in that country.  Congrats on the success and making it out of there!
