TC Hawkin sight

I am having an issue with the original back sight on my  late 70 TC Hawkin. It wants to stay to the right. The spring pulls it that way.

I can push it the left and it springs back to the right. I can move the adjustment screw left to right with no change. The actual sight is not stripped. The spring pulls it to the right.

I was wondering if the right side where the adjustment screw goes in is supposed to be threaded, but it doesn't seem so. Mine  is smooth.

Have not shot it in years. I noticed last week at the range. I put a thick piece of grass between the sight and right side to bring it back to the center.

What  am I missing or doing incorrectly.

Shot in the dark here, and if this is really stupid, I apologize in advance.

Looking at the first pic, is the spring in the right location?

It seems like if the spring was "internal" it would push the right direction and you could adjust it with the screw.
So I guess I'm wondering if you have all the right parts, but not in the right order?

DOES THIS WORK:
* Partially install screw
* Install spring
* Install dove tail sight
* Fully install screw
* Use screw to adjust windage

Dan-o, Thanks for the reply, not stupid at all.

I think i did what you are asking. In the last picture I put the spring to the inside. This didn't work out because the thickness of the spring won't let the adjustment screw move the sight any further to the right. The spring is compressed and the sight is in the middle and won't go any further to the right. 

In the first picture the spring is installed in what looks to be the correct position. On the right side of the sight where the adjustment screw goes in the "hole" is big enough to accommodate the spring.

As mentioned in my above posts, I was thinking that right side of the sight should be threaded, but it is not,  mine is smooth inside like it never was, but that is another one of my WAG's. Anyone with a TC who could verify that? The second picture shows me pushing the sight to the left with my finger.  The parts diagram just shows those parts in picture number three.

I keep thinking it is something simple, that I am overlooking. That, and I am wondering I never noticed that before.

Looking at one of my old TC Renegades, the spring is around the elevation adjustment screw, pushing the sight up. I see no spring associated with the windage adjustment. Without taking the sight apart, the windage adjustment screw seems to be held in place by a keeper of some kind, hence the groove on the end opposite the slotted head. The windage adjustment screw shouldn't move in or out, the sight itself moves on the threads as the screw is rotated but the screw itself should be held in place somehow, allowed to rotate but not move in or out.

Just looked at my Thompson, the sights are different. The windage screw is fixed a detent on the screw head side and a small drift pin on the other.

Copy, my elevation also has spring. When I remove the spring from the windage, the whole sight is loose and slops left or right. Different rear sight I guess. Thanks for the reply.

Have you tried putting the spring on the left side? I'm thinking the spring is used for tension on the sight. I would be looking for wear marks from the spring. It also looks like the screw retaining clip is missing (C clip or Hair pin), it would not affect the sight.

You just solved the mystery. Mine adjustment screw does have an indent for a c-clip. I just don't have the clip. I can hold it with my fingernail and the sight moves left and right like it is supposed to.

Now. Does anyone know where I can get one of those miniature clips? Or any other method to retain that end if the adjustment screw.I have never even seen one that small on a carburetor.

I would ask Skinner Sights.  They are pretty good.  Just my 2 cents.

Just take the screw with you and do a fit check and get two or three. Don't ask me how I know.
