I'd say Merriams.

The State classifies the subspecies by county of kill --- a Winthrop turk would there4 be a Merriam per the state.    :twocents:

Judging by the tannish tail feathers, I would say Rio.

May be a Merriam, maybe a Rio, maybe a Hybrid ... hey it's definitely a turkey!

NWTF biologists say that coloration can vary within a subspecies, and even with the individual turkey thoughout the year (diet, etc).  They also say the only way to know for certain is DNA testing ..... hmmmm.
 :dunno:

Think I will just go along with the state and their subspecies "by county of kill" ... ie: they say it's a Merriam ... good enough for me!

I was just wondering does not look like an eastern from what I have seen on-line. We have seen only 4 at the cabin the hen that comes by 3or4 times a day has 12 chicks with her now. She got in a fight with herself when she walked behind my truck bumper and seen herself lasted about a minute or so before she figured it out.

Easterns were planted on the westside of the state only (note that although the Klickitat is in western Wa., it is considered eastern Wa. as far as turkeys are concerned). For the most part Rios are in north Lincoln County and the Blue Mountain area, and Merriam subspecies pretty much everywhere else in Eastern Washington .... ie: Merriams in the Winthrop area.

It's a Jake and his feathers won't lighten up on his tail for awhile. Could be a Merriam or Reo.

The secondary tail feathers have a lot of what I call chocolate in them, like that of an Eastern but the wing barring is to thin for that. Looks like rio a little, but like stated the State classifies it as a Merriams. :twocents:
