Killifish in the Snake River?
« on: August 01, 2024, 09:30:30 AM »
So the best I can come up with for this minnow I netted is that its a banded killifish. They are not supposed to be in the Snake River yet I saw it cruising the surface and thought it was a pickerel fry possibly or NORTHERN PIKE! I'm certain now it is a killifish. But how did it get there? A few years ago I went out around 2 a.m. and saw some tiny catfish fry digging between the concrete at the boat launch so I netted a few and one of them was clearly a mad tom. Another fish that shouldn't be in the Snake river system.  :dunno:

From Wikipedia: The banded killifish has been introduced outside of its native range in the states of Idaho, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Washington, and West Virginia. In Oregon and Washington, the western banded killifish is reported to be the introduced subspecies

Yeah I found that and was gonna post it. Thanks! I didn't find anything showing the madtom being in the Snake outside Southern Idaho though.

Yeah I also just found a few aquarium threads where people stated they found madtoms in Lapwai creek and the Clearwater and also in Weiser area quite often. Since they don't get very big I guess it provides a good amount of bait fish for eating.  :dunno:
