Pistol Cans / Suppressors????
« on: September 25, 2024, 07:45:59 AM »
Let's talk pistol caliber cans for carbines....??

I would be looking at two of them and they need to fit 9mm and 40 S&W.  They will be going on a couple carbines if that matters.  Here are my questions:

1.  Would you buy caliber specific for pistol or just go with a couple 45 cal. cans to run on all pistols?
2.  Which cans are the best vs. Which ones would you steer clear of?
3.  Cans that are serviceable would be preferred....??

Anything else I'm forgetting??  I'm all ears... and thanks in advance.

For pistols, I have the Silencerco Omega 9K, Omega 45K, and Hybrid 46M so can only speak to those.  Honestly, the modular Hybrid 46M could be used for all of your pistols and rifles if you just wanted one can  (and only spend one tax stamp $).  You can get different pistons and front caps for it to be caliber specific.   I like keeping a suppressor on my 300 BLK and 460 Rowland, and use the Hybrid 46M to rotate through various other guns (along with my other rifle-specific cans, also from Silencerco), so have invested in multiple cans to minimize how many times I have to swap suppressors to different guns.

The only other manufacturer suppressor I have is the Rugged Occulus for my 22LR, so can't really speak to other pistol cans for 9mm and 40 S&W as I only own Silencerco for those.  So far I haven't had any issues with my Silencerco cans.  And I love the Rugged can.

Rugged Obsidian 9
Rugged Obsidian 45

The 9 on 9 is quieter than 45 on 9.
Obsidian 9 suppresses better than an Omega 9

Both come with a booster assembly. Both are user serviceable.

I've had my Dead Air Ghost 45 since DA first came out with them and it has been a great pistol can.  Like many pistol cans it's modular so you can use it in two different lengths.  I have used it on a variety of different host weapons and it has worked well on all of them.  My gunsmith has the Dead Air Mojave 9 which is a couple ounces lighter then my DA Ghost but is a 9mm can where as my Ghost works on a wider range of calibers but like dreadi mentioned, to my ears, the DA Mojave 9 on a 9mm is a little quieter then my DA Ghost is on a 9.  For me the difference/s isn't enough to warrant having both but you can never have to many suppressors so one of each certainly wouldn't be a bad idea either.

If you want to go down the rabbit hole, there are some cans that are able to displace more volume such as a Dead Air Wolfman. It's 9mm larger, so more room for air. But, Dead Air sometimes has a higher scarcity of parts compared to other mfgs. Everyone sells out at some point though.

There's also rifle rated cans in .36 that could be used on rifles and PCC. Alaskan 36 comes to mind.

If you're looking for primarily PCC or SMG suppression, Bowers Group has options as well that may tickle your fancy and they are located in Oregon.

And of course....get all your suppressor from Black Hammer Arms.
