New Pursuits
« on: August 13, 2024, 10:39:37 AM »
Since there are no more deer left and I have given up on the search for intelligent life on earth, I am expanding my photography towards space.

I’m currently building an observatory in the Wenas.   The build is pictured lower right.   I was trying to photograph the Perseus meteor shower, but smoke and clouds hampered that effort.  The shower was lackluster, but Lady A came for a visit.  I snapped a quickly before getting back to chasing meteors.

Pretty cool! Slept on top of a houseboat in lake Shasta last week, made for some good meteor watching. Very little light pollution

Space fascinates me.  What's out there :dunno:

Awesome pics Bone! So there are 2 comets visible.in the next few weeks if I recall and one is going to be brighter than Venus. I am excited to see what you can come up with. Do you have a clear view of the horizon to the West? If not you need to find one I think for this comet.

These will all be messed up as I grabbed them off of FB to share.
Recent adventure

The Bubble Nebula (ngc7635).  literally a bubble in space, created by its star which burns 4 million times brighter than our sun.  It produces gaseous outflows called stellar winds that howl at more than 4 million mph.

My daughter Lilly asked "just how deep into space are you photographing dad"    Well, The bubble nebula is 7100 light years from earth.  That means the light captured in this photo was from about 5000 BC.  Light zips through space at 186,000 miles per second and travels 5.88 trillion miles per year, so this is 7100x5.88 trillion miles away.  Just short of 42 quadtrillion miles away.  For reference, the light from our sun is about 8 minutes away.

Filmed with my 400mm Canon lens, 128 images at 5 minutes each, dodging clouds and Aurora over a couple nights, stacked in deep sky stacker with darks, flats and bias frames, and stretched and edited in photoshop.

All of these have been taken with my 400, except the planets. I used my telescope for them.

Yes, Saturn and Jupiter, the heart nebula and the Iris nebula.  I’ve got lots of learning to do, but working on it.

A friend of mine has a telescope that automatically adjusts for the rotation of the earth. The pics are incredibly clear.

This photo turned out to be one of my most liked ever.  There were about a dozen people who claimed I faked it, but the other 5000 people or so liked it.

Simply incredible photos Diug.
Truly unreal what you've captured.

These kind of pictures add a whole new appreciation of the creation for me.
