Yakima north Youth cow help
« on: August 14, 2024, 03:08:50 PM »
I have dug through old threads and PM'd a few of those folks but I thought I would ask the masses too.  Son drew a Yak North tag  336,340,342,346   10/30-11/10.   Problem is he made the football team (yea but also boo) and this will consume most of his time during then time frame and shooting elk is not an excused absence so our time will be limited, like 2 days maybe.   Pretty familiar with 336 and 340, not so much with 342 and 346.   Hoping some of you folks headed out with pointy sticks and smoke sticks to chase them around early, or really anyone for that matter might be able to provide a suggestion or two or intel.  I know it all can change from September to November and with weather.  I will be out scouting as time permits, but I am going to do whatever else I can to help my son get his first elk and that starts with this.

Thanks and best of luck to everyone

My son has the tag as well. Once the rifle hunters leave the elk should be pretty easy to find and the locations will be dependent upon weather. When will you be able to hunt?

Unfortunately, it will all depend on football, which is 6 days per week.   I'll try and run out and find them on the weekdays to try and set him up but for him it may only be on that last weekend and modern runs into that 1st weekend.  Best of luck to you and your boy.

Id try for the last weekend, they will have calmed down a bit from normal rifle season and if we get any kind of weather here then they will start moving towards feeding station in 342.

how old is he? Not that it matters really but as the parent you decide when you want to pull your son out for a family trip. Its excused if you say so. If the the coach says something different then you need to educate him. I coach wrestling and I would never impose that kind of rule on the kids.  :twocents:

He is 15.   As for your coaching theory on Parent excusing the absence, I agree and wish our coach had the same philosophy as you, but he is an ass hat and does not feel that way and just a *censored*ty coach in general.  On the other hand, I also want him to keep his commitment to a team, but also feel like missing 2-3 days isn't the end of the world especially since he has been at all the practices this summer.  He has already said he probably won't play again next year because of things like this.

I have gotten a few PM's with places to go and those are much appreciated.  Willing to read more if anyone has them.

I had the same problem when my boys went through high school, and I understand your opinion regarding team commitment  vs missing a few days. ... If you miss practice, or god forbid a game, you will sit the bench indefinitely. It definitely impacted our hunts or wiped them out entirely. When I was their age, Coach encouraged family time.... :dunno:

Sounds like a great chance to switch to cross country.

Or play the sick card, but it shouldn't even be necessary.

My son has the muzzy tag sept 28-11and his baseball coach fully understand the commitment to hunting, family time
They start their season back up oct 1 for trsining  But when season started April 1 he missed out on turkey hunting and a trip to Chicago to see his great grandma.  Totally get the commit thing.  What I don't get is school not making it an excused absent.  I love going in there to sign him out early from school and put In bold letters HUNTING.  Or mushroom hunting or fishing.   Could still use the excuse of the flu or the covid. They can't do a damn thing about it.

Things have changed since I was his age, my coach was fine with it but put a tax on it in the form of a steak or two or a few LBS of ground.  Totally worth it!

It's not the school, it is the coach for football.  I have signed him out from school outside of football no issues at all.  Please don't feel like I am judging or preachy here but I don't want him to have to lie to his coach about being sick.. Me personally I don't think that is what I should teach him to do.  Now do I do it for work occasionally?? hell yes!  Do I judge others that do that, not at all... I will let him make his own mind up on that when he gets older, but for now I gotta teach him honesty is the best policy.

PS--good luck too your boy in his hunt and baseball!.

:chuckle: let's just say he is not a runner....   And no it shouldn't be necessary but to play a sick card but I also don't want to teach him to do that.  No being judgy or preachy in anyway, I promise.  I have played my own sick card, but I don't want to teach him that at this age.  Let him grow into it like I did  :)

Dang, how late do you guys play? Our a
Last game is 11/1 pending playoffs of course....so our last game is 11/1 :chuckle:

Hunt as late as possible. Just gets better and better the farther away from general season you get. It chaps my hide bad they don't give these kids better season dates. Why can't they have two weekends outside of the general season :dunno:

It’s almost go time for my sons hunt.  I have got some great tips from folks on when and where to go.  I spent 4 days last week 150+ miles on the truck and 13ish on my feet with 1 cow on private to show for it in those units.  I took the next two days off and am at the bottom of Durr road right now ready to look again in hopes of finding him one he will be able to get with our time constraints.  Hoping one of the unicorn hunters out there have an update on where / if they were seeing cows.

Karl.  Last game could be this Friday but keeping winning and also as late as December and practice is 6 days per week.   I feel bad rooting against them…. Kinda

Thanks for any help

I don’t have any help for you but good luck! It is frustrating when you get these high school coaches that think they are coaching in the major leagues and these kids should be bought in 100% and have no other life. It does lead to some successful seasons for some, but it also drives a lot of kids away from the sports. my nephew is a junior this year and much like your son is debating not playing anything next year because it takes 100% commitment. Skipping summer vacations and they even expect them to skip Thanksgiving if it is out of town because they have practice that morning and seeing family is not an excuse. He just said the other day, why am I even doing this? It’s not like I’m going to play in college or professional. He wants to do it to have fun and stay in shape but hard nose coaches like that  Take the fun right out of it.
Hopefully your son can get a cow down quick and make it back to his commitments. It is a good lesson in life  though, you are constantly juggling stuff and having to make a decision on what is a priority and what no longer is.

My son has the tag also he’s 15. We’re going to head in Friday morning. Plan on going into 340. I’ll let you know if we run into any cows.
