A ditty about how my bear season is going
« on: August 26, 2024, 12:28:20 PM »
Well there ain't no bears anywheres
I've walked and walked from here to theres
And haven't seen hide nor hairs
So they must be hiding in their lairs
'Cause there ain't no bears anywheres

(I actually saw a sow and cub shortly after I came up with this, but I couldn't let this genius composition go to waste)

my west side I-90 corridor experience has been the same.  There were few berries up high and acres and acres of blackberries in the flat land and jack firs where it is near impossible to hunt them...

My opinion: it's going to be poor bear hunting this year in the Cascades and Olympics.  It'll hopefully get better after food sources start to dry up and they have to move around more.  But right now there's not much reason to forage outside of cover because there's tons of berries everywhere.  I can't see calling being of much use either, unless they're super close and it's convenient for them.

Have you been hunting in the rain?

I don't know if it's just me, but I rarely see bears out when it rains, and our august has been wet.

Always seems weird to me, given how many bears we have and how often it rains that they don't deal with it.
You will never shoot a camp bull by spending all your time hunting in the woods.

Have you been hunting in the rain?

I was out during some rain one day, didn't see anything until that sow and cub in the evening. The rain had stopped, but they were in waist high grass that was still wet. I don't think they care much about a normal rain. A heavier, louder rain might make them hole up for awhile, but more so because they can't hear as well than getting them wet.

Well mine isn't much better.
I've drove miles, glassed many of hillsides .
I didn't start bear hunting till the September 1.
Was trying to get my trail cams out, working on a truck for my kids first car in August.
Berry crop over here is dried up now.

So ya I keep at it ,but it's been a little rough.
