MT Pheasant Opener
« on: August 27, 2024, 09:09:05 AM »
Going in blind, looking for words of wisdom....  General plan is to get to Great Falls and make the call to head either NE or East.  Would love to hear from anybody who knows those areas as to what to expect.  I chase a lot of birds, so terrain type etc is not what I'm after.  I'm mostly wondering what accessibility will be like.  Looks like there is a fair bit of DNR/BLM in the area.  Is it worthwhile?  I normally avoid such areas like the plague here in WA.  I'm well acquainted with door knocking.  Is that a good strategy in MT?  Are trespass fees the norm? Anything in particular to make sure we do or don't do?   Thanks for any feedback.

contact Montana fish and game. they will send you block management maps. some areas,  walk in, others with permission. can also look online.
Onx  will also show the properties available and whether block management, state and the such.
Plenty of paces to hunt. Good luck. Jackson

I think the opener is October 12th this year, not the 8th.

I’d look into block management. Montana has a lot of good access through that program

Also get a copy of the Upland Game Bird Enhancement Program access guide.  Will give you a lot of spots and contact info for land owners.

Most people in Missoula to Havre go east.
anywhere north of plentywood down to  baker area. plenty of block management properties and most of the farmers ranchers i have dealt with were a pleasure to ask.

PS last 2 years few bird hunters had encounter w grizzlies as the plains begin. one was great falls area , other by choteau.  should see huns, sharptails and pheasant.
good luck. jackson. if want anything else pm me and we can follow up with a chat.
