What would you do?
« on: August 27, 2024, 09:49:40 AM »
So yesterday morning just before daylight I see one of my cameras picked up a big sow and a cub. 45 minutes later the same camera and same trail into it picks up a giant boar. I am assuming he is following her for the cub.

Would you attempt to call him in via cub in distress or would you stick to the jackrabbit and deer in distress.

Is it thick with heavy cover in that area?   Can you find high ground and just camp on it till you see them?  I’ve never had great success calling so I would choose the spot and stalk or sit on a travel corridor.

The above said…..I try calling a couple times a year and one of times it’s gonna work.

It’s not that thick. I have a strong desire to call one in. I have had no luck but also haven’t tried a bunch. I do have a spot I can sit above the trail.

I wouldn't be surprised if (like me) you probably think you haven't called them in, but you probably did get some interest and got busted and will just never know.  On the original topic, I'd be really hesitant to try a cub in distress with a known sow and cub in the area, because you could get that sow coming in hot and angry and looking to kill and then what would you do about it??  Not sure how that would turn out.  I'd opt for the overwatch idea and see if you can get eyes on him.

Good thoughts.

My only real experience with a sow/cub with a boar in the area had me following the trails in the area.
I found a solid "Marker Tree" that showed years of abuse.
.
It is not breeding season,  and a sow with cubs shouldn't be attractive to a boar at this time of year.
(Again, I am not an expert, although I pretend to be on the internet)
.
I would walk the trails and look for more sign.
.
If you find a marker tree, you have a good spot to just wait.
.
Bear have fairly large travel routes in their territories, and they often overlap.
.
If you can find marker trees, that is from a dominant animal.
.
Bear often use the same trails just because..
.
But, they often use the same trails because it is a frequent travel route.
.
I doubt that the boar was actively hunting a cub this time of year.
It's just not worth the effort to seek a confrontation.
.
Somewhere along that trail their territories overlap.
.
Again, I am not an expert, but I read a lot..
And I see bear fairly often.
.
Usually when it is not season.
.
But honestly I don't see a boar actively hunting cubs.
.
Even the one on Long Island that they had to remove only killed them in the early spring/late winter.
.
I recommend reading Ralph Flowers "The education of a Bear Hunter"
.
His history is not really applicable to modern methods, but their use of main trails and ability to find travel routes and crossing points...
.
If you have multiple bear showing up on an unbaited trail....
.
Walk both directions.
Figure out why they are using that same trail.
.
Why!
Is the biggest question.
.
I guarantee it is not for a one time predatory meal.
.
If you have multiple bear on the same camera without bait...
.
Find the reason.
.
I recommend asking Doug Boze.
I wish Billythekidrock was still on this forum.
.
