Anyone else draw this tag? Me and a buddy both have it but figured I would reach out now to potentially share notes, plans, etc to increase the intel for any other tag holders.

Get out there and look through all the units and find out where the elk like to hang out 1,2,4,12,15,16 generally hold the most elk from my experience out there. But seems like those are the most heavily used units for training. Most of them hold elk it’s just a matter of knowing where to look. Lots of roads and lots of area to see from the road. I found they like hanging out in the draws not visible from the road. Lots of pressure in there from master hunters, Indians, and all the other tags that get hunted in there. If you want to see a lot of bulls hit the central impact area. They live in the safe haven😂
Happiness is being in the woods!!!

I can confidently say that the elk you see during summer scouting, will likely not be there waiting for you during your rifle season. After Master Hunters, Archery tagholders, and the muzzleloader guys, the elk have effectively been pushed around and pressured for 2 solid months. Get to know the roads well and the process of entering and exiting the Installation.

Make sure and follow all of the rules... Oh yeah and don't speed...

Best of luck to you. My buddy has an Archery tag.

Had the tag last year. Get down and get your rifle registered and your rec card. Make sure all your vehicle info is correct and up to date. Gate can be a pain in the ass but not the end of the world if you prepare for it. Learn as many “roads” as you can.  I had good tires but always had 2 spares with me. Hope for the elk units to be open, if not wait and be ready when they do. Good luck on the hunt.

Lots of good advice.

Use the JBLM weapons registration to register your firearms.  Remember NOT to bring the guns on base during registration.

I got drawn too, but for a cow elk in October.

If your vehicle tabs arent up to date they wont allow you on the base to buy your rec card.

Ask me how I know...  :chuckle:

Make sure you get out of your truck because we saw nearly zero elk from the truck during the modern cow season last year. Everything we saw was down in the draws. You need to go way slower than you'd think and use the topography to sneak. We would have filled our tags sooner if we were more patient with our walking pace. Expect all shots to be over 200yards.

I had this tag several years ago, during that time a war was going on so most of the units were having training exercises which closed most of the base for access, hunt was so bad they ended up reinstating everyone's points, I did see a herd of elk in there one day but as soon as they saw me they were on a dead run, ran over the hill where some guy unloaded 9 rounds from a 338 from about 700 yards not even coming close I guess and I never could catch up to them again, seen several nice bucks though, wish I could of had the deer tag that year instead

I also drew the rifle tag for this unit. I took care of all the registration Thursday plus some scouting. I did find a bachelor group of 8 Bulls but I too was told that by October they would be stirred up.
I registered 2 rifles but was told that I could only have 1 in the truck at a time. When I checked out there was a guy that harvested a cow with a muzzle loader. He had the boned the meat in ice chests  and the head. The officers were holding him up because they interpreted the rules to be that the head had to be attached to a quarter. Not sure how that worked out as l had a 4 hour drive ahead of me.
I am starting to question this hunt,  especially the label of a quality hunt.

They truly do not understand how the proof of sex thing works out there.  I had to show them the rcw on my daughters last cow out there.  Had a different guy with my sons and it was a non issue.

It has been an ongoing issue at the gate... the inconsistency issue should be resolved. The CLEO's are holding hunters to the "proof of sex naturally attached" reg this year pretty bad. Just an FYI to any tagholders.

If you're hunting out there download the state law on your phone and be prepared to show and explain it. Most security out there are nice folks but they usually aren't hunters and don't get educated on all the game laws.  Most people for some crazy reason drag stuff out whole so the majority of animals they see still have heads on.  So when bags of meat is all that is present they go on guard.

https://app.leg.wa.gov/wac/default.aspx?cite=220-413-090

(2) It is unlawful to possess or transport big game animals unless evidence of the sex of the animal remains naturally attached to the carcass until the carcass is processed and/or stored for consumption.

(a) Evidence of sex means the head with antlers or horns attached or penis or testes of male big game animals or the head or udder of female big game animals any of which must be naturally attached to at least one quarter of the carcass or to the largest portion of meat.

(b) For the purpose of this rule, "stored for consumption" means at the final point of storage prior to consumption of the meat.

(3) It is unlawful to possess or transport goat, sheep, moose, deer or elk taken in hunting areas which have horn or antler restrictions unless the head or skull plate, with both horns or both antlers naturally attached, accompanies the carcass.

I also recommend if you are going to debone in the field, make sure you have a bag of meat for each quarter and another bag for trim. So 5 bags total. Visually it looks like more meat than 3 bags stuffed to the gills. Also an issue I've had to explain out there :chuckle:

That's a good reminder that proof of sex needs to be attached.

I have found enforcement to be inconsistent there.
