Gmu 336-368
« on: August 29, 2024, 10:29:44 PM »
Good evening! I’m going to start this off by saying my hunting partner is a lucky little *censored* and drew a multi season bull tag for units 336-368. Over the years we spent most of our time in gmu 336 and 340 during archery season.
Over the summer we have been scouting gmu 346 thinking we could compete with less hunters. During our scouting trips we come to find a lot of camp sites and atv/utv riders where ever went. Which I don’t recall being as busy when I drew in 2017.
Now I am spiraling down a rabbit hole and have been looking at gmu 368 which I know nothing about. We have pretty much the whole archery season off and was curious in your guys opinion if it would be worth popping over there for a few days or stick with our current plan and the areas we know.

Stick with hunting 346 especially if you’ve been scouting it

 :yeah:
I noticed the same when scouting for a cow tag two years ago.  All of that went away by the time we hunted.  It is a strong unit with and you have spent time there.  Stick with it.

The cool part about 346 is once you get a bit away from the main congregation areas, you'll quickly be by yourself.  There is some rugged country in 346 and some big ass elk.

One does not hunt in order to kill; on the contrary, one kills in order to have hunted. If one were to present the sportsman with the death of the animal as a gift he would refuse it. What he is after is having to win it, to conquer the surly brute through his own effort and skill with all the extras that this carries with it: the immersion in the countryside, the healthfulness of the exercise, the distraction from his job. ~ Jose Ortega y Gasset

Be advised the FS, has ripped up and blocked a bunch of the roads in the unit to save money on road maintenance.  Considering the logging companies built the roads and hunting the unit since 1996, I have never seen the FS maintaining anything but a few main roads.  Looks to me that they are trying to keep sportsmen out of the area.  Good luck.

Multi season Bull Tag? Is it a raffle tag?

I would stick to 346. Good bulls can be found in there if you're willing to put in the extra work.

My suggestion is use a few days in archery to find a shooter bull then go hang him with a rifle.  All of those units have a 350+ bull in them.

I'm not sure what tag that is, but if you can hunt 346 during the rut or for branch antler bulls with a rifle it's a great tag.  I would check the regulations for other seasons, it can be a circus when the spike hunters show up and there are some other draw tags in there as well.  The latter isn't much of an issue compared to the mob that shows up a day or two before the spike opener.

Good luck!
