The best anti-bear pistol and round..
« on: September 14, 2024, 08:40:16 PM »
to carry back into a kill site in big brown bear country.  To clarify, I’m talking UL. I do not normally carry my UL hand cannon when hunting but always bring it along for the ride when heading back into the elk kill site for the second + pack out.  Taurus 444 UL Titanium (1.8 lbs) loaded with 6 HSM 305 grain bear loads. I’ve shot thru sone amazing “things” with this combo, no kidding.  Whatcha got that will challenge this combo?  I’m all ears.

I prefer my G20 with hard cast bear loads.
15+1 capacity.
More accurate (at least for me) than a wheel gun, with sufficient penetration for most circumstances......   My guess is that there are very limited shots where a 44 would penetrate that a hard cast 10MM wouldn't.

I just reallllllllllllllllllllllllllllly hope I never have to put it to the test.

I love my G20 as well
And bear spray in area with grizz or Brownies
Shoots good with lots of capacity
I remember being over in Montana near Choteau shed hunting
Had a 41 on
Guy says that a Blackhawk ya got on ?
Yup
Says better get something semi or double action
Lots grizzlies out here
Thought about it
Peddled the 41
Never regretted it

Agree Dan-O, I hope neither one of us are ever in that situation although I think both of us have been very close (I know I have). I agree that the the availability of a multiple round weapon seems logical, but…I argue that most Grizz attacks are at very close quarters (an obvious peril of most bow hunters by our very nature, being quiet/lurking around in Grizz country hunting elk). Not much time available to rattle off multiple shots to say the least. I’ve always been a fan of, if unfortunately it ever occurs, to BLAST the biggest, most nervous system disrupting chunk of lead into the *censored*/bitch as they’re dragging me off by my mangled leg. Hope this never happens but again, I’ve seen what my pistol/round combo is capable of.

I've had a number of Glocks(some tricked out) but they just don't feel good to me (but they always fire!), nor as accurate as a 1911 platform-for me, most 44 mags except S&W 329 are heavy to me. I ended up with a Kimber KHX with Red Dot in 45 and converted it to a 460 Rowland shooting Underwood 200 gr. Penetrators. Very happy with gun so far, off bench 2" groups at 20 yards, 12 yards can fire fairly fast offhand and dump 10 rounds(ext. mag.) into an 8" circle. Has already proven itself up close on Black Bear.

Carry a wolf tag and a 300 win mag for any trips back to the kill site. If there are any signs of a grizzly bear at the kill site when you return get out of there and leave the remaining meat.

Always carry bear spray when hunting in bear country. Perfectly legal to spray the bear once he gets close and you don’t have to wait until the bear is attacking to react like you do with a firearm.

G20 as well with 15 rounds of underwood 200 grain hard cast and an extra 15 rounds on my belt. I"ve seen the outcome of bear spray first hand if the wind is blowing in your direction and not the bear's ask my buddy how that felt.  :yike: :bash: :dunno: :chuckle: :chuckle:

Why 15 rounds you ask. Try rolling a tire down a hill at you and see how many rounds you hit on target in a pressure situation simulating a charge. Sure it may only take 1 but i like having 14 more just in case. :chuckle:

If the bear is close enough to be effective with pepper spray it’s already created a justified self defense scenario.  I’m spraying lead.

Well I have been giving this exact thing some thought lately as I am going to go to Idaho Priest River country north ,to set up a camp for my buddy who has a moose tag .

I will be out spotting for him when not tending camp. The largest hand gun I own is a 45 Judge. I did a lot of reading and if I have to go in on his moose kill I am carrying one or two of these.

Have pepper spray four cans.
KSG loaded with slugs
Coach Gun 12 Ga loaded with slugs
S& W SVE 40 auto
Judge 45 colt

Thats what I have and those I can shoot. I am not hunting just spotting ,cooking packing.

I shot a charging wild boar at a range of 3 feet once - was very glad I had a 12 ga slug.  I’m afraid I’d be nerdless if I was carrying any pistol - take a lot of practice to jump - turn - and hit somehing in the head with a pistol.
