FN 57 MRD
« on: December 13, 2024, 07:43:02 AM »
Anyone shooting a FN 57 MRD? If so, what do you think about it, is it worth the money?
Thanks,

I have a FN five seven Mk2 not the newer Mk3.  They're pretty similar with the exception the Mk3's have a milled slide and are optic ready and from what I understand the Mk3 has a better trigger which is the biggest complaint I have with mine.  The FN five seven cartridge is fun, sorta, to shoot.  They have a lot of bark and are LOUD so make sure you wear really good ear protection when you shoot one.

It's a really cool looking little cartridge and the recoil is pretty minimal as well as they're pretty accurate.  I wouldn't want to ever talk someone out of a purchase so if you want one disregard everything I'm saying and get one but honestly I'm not really sure what they're good for other than if you just want one.  I bought one for no other reason than it just seemed like a good idea at the time but they are a good quality solid gun so if you have a specific purpose for one or maybe like me you just think it seems like something you gotta have, well, it is almost Christmas so treat yourself to one.

My main reason for looking to purchase is for Coyote hunting... after shooting one and going to retrieve I don't always want to pack my rifle if I don't have to, especially when retrieving more than one. Problem is sometimes though they appeared to be dead they aren't...then the rodeo begins. I have been using a KelTec 22 mag but can't rely on them 100% of the time, but they are light and great to pack. Sooo looking at reviews on the FN the one thing that most all say is they are reliable and with the MRD being able to mount a Red Dot is a great feature for my eyes. That's my main reason for looking to buy one, any reliability or jamming issues with yours?
Thanks!

I've never had a single feeding or reliability issue with mine that I can recall.  I got a smoking deal on FN SS197SR ammo, the blue tip Vmax stuff, shortly after I bought mine and that's all I've ever shot in it.

I'm assuming your KelTec 22mag is a PMR30, what issues do you have with it that cause it to not run reliable for you?  They're a fugly looking thing but I actually like shooting my PMR27 better then I do my FN Five Seven.  I call mine a PMR27 because if I only load 27rnds in the mags it'll run the 30gr Vmax ammo flawlessly without a single hiccup.  I don't know what issues you are having with yours but have you looked into any of the stuff MCarbo has for the PMR30's to see if that'll help your problem? https://www.mcarbo.com/kel-tec-pmr-30-accessories-upgrades

I don’t have an fn but was going to get and then saw the palmetto state armory 5.7 with a cut out for an optic. I got that and have been happy for the price. No failure to feed or fire. Just another option that may be cheaper.

I have 4 PMR30's and none have been 100% reliable. I have done the Mcarbo kit where I replaced all internals, even have one with their Red Dot mounting system. I love the little guns and I think they are the best for lightweight packing, I just have to have something that is more reliable, have tried 3-4 different types of ammo and different bullet weights and the one with the Mcarbo parts is good 98% of the time, but my dog got chewed up really good and my hand opened up when gun did not fire second shot, but jammed last week. I know all the tricks on how to stack the magazines and the few times (maybe 3-4 times in my life) that I really needed 100% reliability it just didn't happen this one time with the Keltec. The other times were when we could run hounds and a Bear and a couple Cougars needed up close and personal attention, never an issue till this time with KelTec. I ordered the FN 57 MRD after further diving into them, little bigger, heavier, but everything looks like very reliable... we'll see :-)

Like I mentioned before I don't recall ever having a single issue with my Mk2 version.  My only complaint is the trigger could certainly be better but it sounds like the newer Mk3 like you're getting has a better/upgraded trigger in them.

If you don't mind, once you get yours report back and tell me how you like it compared to your PMR30's and especially what the new trigger is like in the Mk3's.  FN makes good stuff and they've been steadily improving their five sevens over the years with each new version so this newest model should be the best one yet and you'll likely really like it.

I have the Ruger 5.7 and absolutely love it.  A buddy bought the PSA Rock and it has been a great shooter as well.  Love that little round!

I purchased a FiveseveN when it came out and have had no issues since. I can still acquire the target pretty well so haven’t needed a red dot on top, but I do have a Streamlight TLR-2 for it, although I don’t take it very often.

Most factory ammo is severely dumbed down, your American Eagle and SS197 will be about 1700fps, while Speer Gold Dot 40gr. will be about 1800fps.

I’d be interested in your brass if you are willing to save it.
