Glad I don’t have a deer tag there this year. The way the weather is it will be mid November until it maybe under control

the fire was fine until yesterday and it blew up with 60mph wind. Yeah the snow will put it out at some point

Just checked in with my buddy over in North Fork and he says it’s pretty smoky over there. That area is tough to hunt when the smoke settles in around the Salmon River.

Got an email earlier today offering to let me get a refund minus a $50 fee. I'm holding out hope that I can still get the last week of the season in. The fire isn't in an area I planned to hunt anyway.

Way to hold out hope, but I’m over here right now and that fire is still cranking. Another fire is going right down to the river and they are closing parts of 21 because they figure it’s about to jump the river. I  planned on hunting wlk in 28 and I’m figuring on different plans. I highly doubt it will open up by then and it’s open till the 8th

Looks like there's snow creeping in the forecast a week from now.  Hopefully that's not a fluke!

Was the refund offer just for your deer tag or was it for an elk tag as well?

I only have the deer tag. My email just talked about deer but I'd imagine elk tag holders would have the same offer.

I have a Salmon B tag and a 21A deer tag and I haven’t received any communications from IDFG. My guess is that 21A and 21 will be very crowded this year.

Yeah I guess it makes sense, since you have 3 units for elk there's no reason to offer a refund.

I've got the same exact tags!  I'll be traveling in menacing style, hunting out of a Forester.  Well, mostly parking it and backpacking in.  Crossing fingers for snow.

I don't know about tough - I've definitely gotten the stink eye from a few people there in the past but haven't had any windows broken yet.  Kind of like hunting from the Forester - easy to backpack into places or run and gun sleeping in the back.  Believe it or not, my ground clearance is better than some of the newer base-trim trucks out there (F150, Dodge Ram).  Not to say I haven't gotten into situations I haven't wanted to be in...snow storms that have dumped a foot or a wind storm in a burn area to name a few.  The worst was when I only had a hand saw and a tow rope in 21 up near Long Tom and had to cut like 30 trees in a 5 mile section just to drive out of there.  The chainsaw has come ever since.

I’ve had a few of those long nights as well over there. If I see a forester I’ll say high to you next week. I’ll be headed east in about 6 hours.

Good luck out there and happy hunting!

Fortunately the places I've been looking at aren't very close to the (new) burn zone, but it would be fun to run in to y'all - probably not too hard to figure out who I am... though I probably won't be by my vehicle very often, hopefully anyway.  Best luck to everyone out there!

Looks like they rescinded the Garden Fire closure area across the Salmon today. All of 21 should be open for business.
