Outdoor Edge butcher set

Any experience with this set, good or bad?

Doing some research, looking at Cutco, Victoronix, etc. 

For just once or twice a year game processing, not sure $250.00 & up for a couple of knives is really justified in my case.

I have that set and love it. I have chopped up a couple animals with it so far. I would keep it in the kitchen for everyday use if the wife would let me.

I have a set in the kitchen and one in the truck. Use them all the time.

Cutco are not worth getting, poorly made IMO. The set is not that bad, price is right. My home and camp knives are commercial chef grade and spendy.

My outdoor edge kit goes on every big game hunt and stays in the truck until needed.  It comes out again when I butcher an animal for freezing at home.  Probably only use 3 or 4 of the items in the case though.

Priced well, good knives, easy to sharpen and they hold an edge decently.  No complaints.

I don’t have that set, but I’ve been thinking of it for awhile, now. I have some other outdoor edge pieces & I believe they’re the best value for your money available.

Outdoor Edge is one of those companies that makes you uneasy about what your buying. I don't know why, but their knives are very good quality in my opinion. The kits seem to work just fine. Sharpen easily. I can't seem to find anything really wrong with them but they still give you that feeling of not being worth the money.

I’m not really a fan of the steel (420J2) used in these.  Sharpens well but edge retention is mediocre at best.  I’d rather spend the money on one knife with better steel.

I kind of feel the same way.  Price seems too good to be true.  They had a pro-deal for Hunters Ed instructors a few years back and I bought several items from them.  I swear by my swing blade - love it and the gut hook is the best design I have used (and I have tried many).  Simply impossible for it to get hung up with hair and stop cutting.

I picked up a short machete as well and I love that thing.  Easy to swing and cuts well.

Regarding the steel - you can absolutely do better as you note CP.  But these are not meant to be heirlooms.  And they get the job done for a reasonable price.  Someone who is a knife aficionado would be underwhelmed for sure.

Just ordered the set for pick up later today.

Cabelas has a 10% off sale going today, so that combined with some Cabelas bucks got the kit down to less than half price with tax.
