Idaho Billy

Well, with the luck of the draws, I was one of three lucky recipients that drew a nonresident Idaho goat tag this year. With work and other summer obligations, I was only able to get back and scout once in August, but was to locate and observe a couple dozen nannies and Billy ‘s in a weekend trip with one potential shooter and one monster nanny.

So with September and first week of October hunts out of the way, I’d the privilege to help three buddies with two big bull tags and a sheep hunt, and now it was time to prepare for the goat hunt. We planned a launch date of October 17 and packing in for a week. As we all know this was the first week of high Mountain Snows Throughout the West Coast. With Basecamp set our Friday morning view was a bit snowy.. we made the great decision to glass from Basecamp. Tell we all went snow blind, then snuck into town for burgers and beer.

With Friday evening temps raising and snow melting off we decide on Saturday morning we’re going to day hunt for a couple day. So as we pull out of Basecamp, the 1st miles is straight up through a rock cut to the first high mountain lake.
As we sat and glassed we were able to pick up a small Billy but not in the shooter or even interested category. So we continue along the Ridgeline and prepared to drop into the next big basin.

As we continue through the backcountry, stopping glassing and slowly picking that country apart, my hunting partner picked up a goat, moving through the timber. at over 1000 yards away all we could tell us it was a good goat, but we’re unable to get a look at his head or his horns before he bedded down.
We made the decision that we were gonna go and set up on him just in case he was the Billie I’d seen earlier this summer 500 yards away from that spot. We figured due to terrain and approach angles that we can get within 400 yards for a possible shot.

So after about an hour and a half of carefully Boondocking some timber pockets and rolling Rocky Bluffs we were able to get set up on the bedded Billy at 425 yards.
With it being a calm mid afternoon, thermals were perfect and the Billy had no clue we were there. So we waited and we waited and he finally turned his his head and we decided he was the Billy from this summer and I was going to take him when he stood up.

No ethics police
Please forgive the language and don’t question me on shooting I wouldn’t have taken the shoot if I wasn’t comfortable with. Im shooting a 6.5 PRC with a 156 gr Berger.

This was a great trip overall pre-scouting paid off and having a good crew of friend and family made it just that less painless. From kill site back to camp was just over six hours.
I checked him at the mandatory game check for mountain goats and he’s just 10 inches with 6 inch bases
