Not exactly "recall", but rather "check up" is how I and my buddies use "tone".

Whistles tell the birds exactly where you are.  Voice tells the birds where you are.  Tone is much more stealthy.

If you hunt wild pheasant, stealth is a prerequisite.

You CAN teach them that different tone patterns (1 beep, 3 beeps, etc.) mean different things.

The critical thing is that the dog knows the commands in yard work before extending the distance with a collar.  In the yardwork, my word (for check up, change direction) was "ho".  When adding the collar, just use both the voice and tone together, eventually dropping the voice.

I use the tone on my GPS collar to recall my French Brittany even when he’s out of sight.
But you have to do the work so they know what that tone means.
My Britt also will change directions with 2 beeps or whistles I’ll use both depending on the distance
I'm your dam tour guide Arnie please don’t wonder off the dam tour.

My main use is a whistle with e collar as a back with tone/vibration and shock last.
The only man who never makes a mistake, is the man who never does anything!!
The further one goes into the wilderness, the greater the attraction of its lonely freedom.
