Anybody hunted Snake River in Oregon?
« on: November 01, 2024, 07:48:20 AM »
I'll be heading over in a few days. I've been planning and preparing for a long time and know most of the country very well. Just trying to make sure I have all my bases covered. Plan is to hunt on foot from a truck camp with backpacking in an option depending on weather. Weather will be the deciding factor on every decision.  Not taking any stock at least for the first half of season, but have them at home 4 hours away ready to go if I need packers. I'm mainly curious to hear from anybody that's hunted it in the past regarding pressure. We took horses in years ago for my wife's hunt and saw just a few folks. I expect to see plenty more this year being on foot. Anybody have any experience?

Nasty terrain, but you know that already. Why not take stock from the get go? Just curious, as a boot hunter I’d kill for stock to get deep haha

A few reasons for not taking stock. Some areas I want to hunt just don't really require them but the main reasons are, I'll be mostly solo and it adds a ton of work at the beginning and end of each day, and most importantly, I'm fairly inexperienced with them and generally rely on my wife who I call "My Outfitter" :chuckle:

I have hunted it the last six seasons. (Mix of rifle and bow).

Which general area of the unit are you hunting in?

I would definitely pack your snow shoes this year!

I'm hunting it this year. Live in La Grande. Made a few scouting trips already. Everthing is weather dependent in that country and its looking like that could be a factor this year. It's a blessing and a curse. A bunch of those Eagle Cap and imnaha elk migrate through when the snow flies, but to much snow and you can't access anything from the top. I plan on using a base camp then have all my lightweight stuff to bivy out if needed. I have horses on call so I can go a little deeper if I need to. Never hunted it during rifle season. Curious to see what the crowds are like as well.

If you were going in on horses, you should expect to see a few other people, for sure.

Going in on foot, I’d expect to have quite a bit of competition.

My buddy went one year without me and said they were in an area with very few guys… and fewer elk.

I think if I were over there in an area and there were no guys around, I’d take it as an indication that I was in the wrong place.

Did I mention you should bring snow shoes? Haha.
