My first quality tag - Chiwawa
« on: November 06, 2024, 02:41:17 PM »
Hello all! I got drawn for my first quality buck tag! I was drawn for the Muzzleloader Chiwawa unit. I'm super excited about tagging my first big buck but I have never hunted this area! I have not had time to scout as we where focused a Bull tag for the mission unit (not my tag), do to the focus on the Elk I have not had time to scout. I will be over there this weekend and next to get to know the roads. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Pray for snow and pack your vehicle accordingly. Snow chains for all 4 tires, shovel, hopefully winch. We'd love to see your pictures and read your posts about your hunt,  successful or not. Good luck

I wouldn't pray for snow. I had an archery tag a few years ago and snow made 99% of the unit look like a glacier. All 8 tag holders were crammed into a few thousand acres that contained any deer. Saw one good buck in a week and had at least 4 other hunters stalking it every day in crunchy snow- not ideal for bow hunting.  If I remember right, the muzzy tag is a week before the archery season and only 1 or 2 tags, so conditions and hunter density should be considerably better. I talked to a guy who had an archery tag the year before, on a low snow year, and said it was very good and only ran into 2 other hunters.  So, be careful what you pray for. It looked like awesome area if it wasn't white.

 :yeah:

The “pray for snow” mantra is for the rifle hunt. By muzzy, there’s often too much snow and most of the deer have passed through.  There is already snow up high, you don’t want much more.

agreed on the too much snow, snow line right now is about 3600 feet, first week of November... deer are already down lower in this unit as I spent all of Sunday up in the 4800-5300 feet looking for tracks and a big buck. saw 1 deer, big buck for sure... head back over Monday for the rest of the season if you want more info

For archery agree on less snow. Makes it easier to pick out deer, but much harder to get close to them.
Had the permit years ago. From my experiences, these deer spend a lot of time bedded, and can be hard to see. Spend alot of time behind the glass
