Let’s see your Portable Winch projects

One of the best things I ever received as a gift was from my employer when I retired after 27 years. A Portable Winch with all the extras, winch ,rope ,travel box , shackles, tree slings,
Etc.

Since than I have used it for a number of projects,

Pulling a 2 k stump out of my yard and on to a trailer by myself.
Yarding logs for firewood
And most recently winching my buddy’s Idaho moose 1400 ft to the truck and up on a trailer  whole.

I just bought the Warn 750 pound drill winch.  Purpose was to hoist animals into the truck, quads etc.   used it on my son’s elk hunt to hoist his elk into a tree for skinning.   It’s a real back saver and works great.

Its easier at a point before your mid 60s

But Im still doing it that way

Yeah that’s me. I am 73, the winch is a lot easier for the big stuff. I wouldn’t use it for a deer unless it was down a steep incline. The moose my buddy got was 1400 ft from the nearest truck. Dragging it out whole and dressing it out next to the truck was a lot cleaner and easier with better lights. It’s not fast but involves little effort. I had sleds which worked great for hauling winch in and out plus anything else we needed.

Three of us could not drag the moose. Without the winch we would have been skinning and packing in the dark.

Hey Ghost, great to hear of the moose success! Any chance you’ll be able to share any photos from hunt? Been wondering how it went.

My buddy Tim and I traveled to priest river area and met my buddy Alex who had drawn a bull moose tag. We set up camp. Tim and I were just there to support Alex .We st up three wall tents and a small cook shack, cooked all the meals and cut split wood. When we were done with camp chores we went and found Alex and scouted for him.

The country he was hunting was flat all small pines. We were in moose every day. He was going to take the first bull he saw.
At one time while Alex. Was hunting there was a bull standing 100 yards behind his Jeep.

It was a fun trip. He killed his Moose on the 5 th day. No butcher would take it unless it was boned out. So we helped with that too.
Winching it out was the best part of trip for me.

Beautiful bull, sounds like a fun trip. May sound like dumb question but does dragging an animals for miles damage the meat at all? I once considered dragging a deer back to my truck on a gravel road (about 2 miles down hill). But, decide to just break it down and pack it out. Was worried I might damage some of the back straps .

Never drug one miles. But if you don’t care about the hide, dose t hurt.  I wouldn’t drag one with a truck or atv on gravel. I have sleds and a roll up deer drag. I have drug deer 1000 ft down before dressing out just to keep them clean. Never boned an animal out in  the field.
Quartered an elk once years ago.
Dragging out in the woods and hill the ground is soft or loose.

I wouldn’t drag a bear if I wanted the hide.  Never heard of damaging meat. I think your worst enemy is dirt and heat.
